All the Medicare Weight Loss Benefits You Can Use Right Now

Losing weight can be hard work. But if you have Medicare, you may have access to certain benefits that make it easier to reach your goal.

“People don’t always realize how many services and treatments Medicare can help cover,” says Danielle Kunkle Roberts, founding partner of the insurance agency Boomer Benefits and a Medicare Supplement accredited adviser. “Weight loss coverage and costs depend on the treatment, someone’s personal health circumstances, and the type of Medicare coverage they have,” she adds.

Whether you’re interested in nutrition support, gym memberships, glucagon-like peptide-1 medication (GLP-1), or weight loss surgery, it helps to know what benefits may be available to you.

Weight Loss Benefits With Original Medicare: Parts A and B

You may qualify for preventive counseling and nutrition therapy services under Medicare Parts A and B. These include:

  • Intensive Behavioral Therapy (Part B) Eligible for people with a body mass index (BMI) higher than 30, the Intensive Behavioral Therapy for Obesity program covers services such as a free obesity screening, nutritional evaluation, and ongoing counseling to help you lose weight through diet and exercise. These services must be provided by a doctor, physician assistant, nurse practitioner, or clinical nurse specialist.

  • Medical Nutrition Therapy (Part B) If you have diabetes or kidney disease, you’re eligible for free medical nutrition therapy services that help people manage health conditions through diet. These services include a nutrition and lifestyle assessment, nutrition therapy services, lifestyle support for diabetes, and follow-up visits to check your progress. You need a referral from your doctor to participate.

  • Weight Loss Surgery Eligible for people with a BMI higher than 35 and at least one obesity-related condition, covered procedures include adjustable gastric banding, biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, and vertical gastric banding. Costs for each procedure vary, and you may be responsible for unpaid deductibles or copays.

Medicare Part D

If you’re interested in losing weight with a GLP-1, you now may be eligible through Medicare Part D, which handles prescription drugs. Weight loss drugs used to be excluded from Part D (except for people with certain underlying conditions), but certain medications now have temporary coverage through the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge program. The copay is $50 a month.

Covered GLP-1s include the orforglipron (Foundayo) tablet, semaglutide (Wegovy) prescription or injection, or a specific tirzepatide (Zepbound) pen.

Your doctor will need to show your insurance company that you meet the requirements for GLP-1 coverage before you can get the prescription drug. You’re eligible if you:

  • Have a BMI of 35 or higher

  • Have a BMI of 30 or higher with uncontrolled high blood pressure, stage 3a or higher chronic kidney disease, or diastolic heart failure

  • Have a BMI of 27 or higher and have prediabetes or peripheral artery disease or have had a stroke or heart attack

The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge is set to cover GLP-1s through December 31, 2027. “Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) is using the program to gather data that could help shape future GLP-1 coverage, but we don’t have a guarantee yet that coverage will continue as the way it exists right now,” says Kunkle Roberts. So if you get a GLP-1 through the Bridge program, watch for updates from CMS and your Part D plan as the program’s end date approaches.

Medicare Advantage/Part C

If you have a Medicare Advantage/Part C plan, you may be able to access extra benefits that can support your weight loss efforts, such as:

  • Healthy meal home delivery

  • Subscriptions to fitness apps for older adults, such as SilverSneakers GO

These perks don’t apply to every Medicare Advantage/Part C plan, and an individual plan’s offerings can change over time. “Extras vary by plan and could be removed at the drop of a hat,” says Kunkle Roberts. So you’ll need to check your plan’s details to see what’s covered for you.

How to Get Started

If you’re interested in learning more about Medicare weight loss benefits, you can call your insurance company or talk to your doctor. They can help you find out whether you’re eligible for GLP-1s, a gym membership, lifestyle support services, weight loss surgery, or other extras.

And if you’re interested in switching to a plan that offers more weight loss benefits, keep in mind that the main opportunity is during open enrollment, which runs from October 15 through December 7. If you currently have Medicare Advantage, you can also make a onetime change through the Medicare Advantage open enrollment period between January 1 and March 31.

Before committing to a potential new plan, it’s good to look at all of the details to make sure it’s the best fit for your healthcare needs as a whole. “A plan might have a great-looking weight management benefit but higher premiums, a smaller doctor network, higher out-of-pocket costs, or drug restrictions that make it less attractive overall,” says Kunkle Roberts.

The Takeaway

  • Your Medicare plan may offer benefits you may not be aware of to help you lose weight.

  • You may be eligible for nutrition or lifestyle support, gym memberships, GLP-1s, or weight loss surgery, depending on your coverage.

  • Talk with your doctor about the right treatment options for you, and confirm your plan’s coverage with your insurance company.
