Richard Riehle’s official cause of death was determined to be oropharyngeal cancer, a form of neck and head cancer that originates in the throat, according to a death certificate obtained by People.

Riehle, perhaps best known for delivering a memorable performance in the comedy “Office Space,” died on Oct. 15 at age 78.

The certificate, which noted that the actor died at the Beverly Hills Rehabilitation Centre, also listed a cerebrovascular accident, or stroke, as a major contributing condition to his death. Riehle was cremated on Oct. 23, according to the certificate.

Riehle also starred in 1995’s “Casino,” 2011’s “Bridesmaids,” the 2000s sitcom “Grounded for Life,” and more. He most recently appeared in HBO’s “Barry” as Warden Reynolds in 2023.

Riehle’s management team, Wright Entertainment, shared a statement after his death earlier this month.

“We are deeply saddened to confirm the passing of our beloved client, Richard Riehle, this past weekend,” his reps said. “A remarkable actor whose career in theater, film, and television spanned nearly five decades and more than 400 projects, Richard leaves behind an extraordinary legacy.”

The statement continued, “Beyond his immense talent, he will be remembered for his genuine goodness, boundless kindness, and unwavering generosity, particularly toward emerging actors and filmmakers, whom he encouraged and supported at every opportunity.”

His reps added that Hollywood “lost an exceptional talent, and our community has lost a truly wonderful man.”
