No, Macaulay Culkin Did Not Do Blackface For His Halloween Costume

It’s not unusual for celebrity Halloween costumes to go very viral. But this year, Macaulay Culkin’s look got attention for all the wrong reasons.

In case you missed it, over the Halloweekend, Macaulay posted a selfie in which he is dressed as a soldier, staring blankly into the camera lens. “War. War never changes,” he captioned the pic. “Happy Halloween y’all.”

For the military look, Macaulay shaded his face with green paint. However, the dim selfie lighting made it easy to confuse the green face paint for something else — something far, far, far more offensive. And so, when the pic was shared on X by the popular account @DiscussingFilm, people were a little alarmed at first glance.

The selfie has over 15.8 million views on X, and now, I’m very pleased to provide photographic evidence that Macaulay was definitely not doing blackface. Nor was he intentionally dressed as “the thousand-yard stare soldier meme,” or Robert Downey Jr.’s character in Tropic Thunder. Nope, as it turns out, Macaulay was actually dressed as one of the toy soldiers from the Toy Story movies.

And as you can see from these photographs, taken in natural light, he was painted BRIGHT green.

Adorably, his costume was part of a family theme, with the trick-or-treating pics also showing that his fiancée, Brenda Song, was dressed as Jessie, while one of their two sons was dressed as Buzz Lightyear.
