JetBlue Increases Checked Bag Fees to $50 Amid Rising Fuel Costs

JetBlue is increasing its checked bag fees for the second time in under a year.

The airline announced the change on Tuesday, Nov. 3, citing rising jet fuel prices and operating costs. JetBlue first raised checked bag costs by $9 in March because of “rising operating costs.”

For most economy passengers who check one bag on domestic, Caribbean, and Latin American flights, it will cost $50, an increase from the previous $39 price for off-peak periods, per CBS News. During peak travel periods, the fee will go from $49 to $55.

The airline added that customers should add checked bags to their trips at least 24 hours before departure to save up to $15 on the first checked bag.

“We’re adjusting checked bag fees to help offset rising fuel and operating costs,” JetBlue said in a statement, per CNBC. “This helps us keep our base fares competitive while giving customers the choice to pay for a checked bag only if they need one.”

Those who hold status with the airline will have some exemptions from the update fee.

JetBlue Plus, JetBlue Business, and JetBlue Premier cardmembers can check one bag for free for the cardholder and up to three bags for travel companions. TrueBlue Mosaic members may also get one checked bag for free. Mosaic 2, 3, and 4 members are allotted two free checked bags.

The cost of jet fuel has been the airline’s largest cost, followed by labor. The price has almost doubled in 2026 after the Iran war began in February. According to CNBC, jet fuel cost $4.44 a gallon on Tuesday in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico.

Other airline have also increased their baggage fees this year, such as Delta, United, and Southwest.
