Clear is expanding its e-gates to speed up airport security. Here’s how it works.

Clear’s biometric identity-verification service, Clear+, helps travelers breeze through airport security — and the experience is becoming even faster. On Nov. 4, Clear said it expects to expand its e-gate program to the majority of airports that offer Clear+ by the end of the year.

Clear+ is available at 63 airports across the United States, with Tampa International as its most recent adopter. It lets travelers bypass the traditional ID check line using facial scans. Before the arrival of e-gates, travelers would go to a Clear kiosk at the airport for verification, then be met by a Clear agent who’d escort them to a TSA officer to complete the identity verification process.

The service is particularly helpful for people who are already stressed by security lines at the airport — or those attempting to test out the “airport theory” and arrive mere minutes before boarding. (Our tip? Don’t do it.)

In August 2025, Clear introduced its e-gate service. With the Clear e-gate, you scan your boarding pass, then walk up to an automated gate that scans your face, allowing TSA to verify you electronically before you proceed to security screening.

It’s faster and doesn’t require you to be passed from one agent to the next.

What’s the difference between Clear+ and TSA PreCheck?

Clear+ and TSA PreCheck are separate programs, but you can use them in tandem.

A Clear+ membership allows you to verify your identity in a dedicated lane before proceeding to security, while TSA PreCheck gives you access to an expedited security line. (And typically, it allows you to keep your laptop in your carry-on and a light jacket and belt on as well.)

Clear+ still lets you move ahead of people in the regular ID check line, even without PreCheck, meaning you’ll likely save time throughout the security process — though it’s not a guarantee, as Clear+ lines can also have waits.

If you have Clear+ but not PreCheck, you’ll have to undergo standard passenger screening, but you might get there faster.

How much does Clear+ cost?

A Clear+ membership costs $219 per year, while TSA PreCheck costs $85 (or less) for five years; prices can vary by enrollment provider. You can also enroll in TSA PreCheck on the Clear website and complete your application at a participating Clear location, without scheduling an appointment.

Some premium travel credit cards offer reimbursement for Clear+ and/or TSA PreCheck and Global Entry, so if you’re considering a membership, check the cards in your wallet to see if you already have unused statement credits that can help make your airport security experience easier and faster.

Earning status with certain airlines can also give you a discount on Clear+.
