Beloved U.S. city named the most beautiful city in winter and what to do there

I have to admit, as much as I love the holiday season, I am not a “winter” person. The colder temperatures, the darker days, and the lack of accessibility to pools all weigh heavily on me during the season. One thing that does keep me sane is traveling, and that doesn’t necessarily mean escaping to warmer climates (though I have no opposition to doing just that).

If I am going to endure the frigid, dark season, I might as well pick a spot that’s visually stunning. According to research conducted by Premier Inn that used eye-tracking software to determine how long people ogled various locations, participants named Boston the most beautiful city to visit in the winter. It earned an impressive 2.66 seconds of viewing time as participants took in snowy images of the historic colonial city’s architecture and admired the Boston Common and Public Gardens.

What makes Boston so beautiful in the winter?

Hall of fame Boston Braves baseball player Billy Herman once said of the city, “Boston has two seasons: August and winter.” Jokes aside, considering that for a good eight months out of the year it feels like winter, the city and its residents have fully embraced cold-weather living.

Aesthetically, there is so much to take in during the winter. While these sites are stunning and accessible in warmer months, the picture of them in fresh-fallen snow adds to their beauty instantly.

  • Beacon Hill & Acorn Street – The most photographed street in Boston, this gorgeous and historic area is even more stunning covered in snow. It is quintessential 1700s Boston, with cobblestone streets and red brick row homes, making it postcard-worthy in every season.

  • Boston Common & Public Garden – Snow-covered paths, frozen pond views, and perfect winter photos await visitors. Though most of the vegetation is dormant, the Common and Gardens retain their breathtaking appeal. The Common is the first public park in the U.S., and the Gardens are the first public botanical gardens, offering a distinctly Victorian vibe.

  • The Esplanade / Charles River – The waterside area is a hub of activity year-round. Peaceful winter walks with skyline views lead to picturesque docks and serene water vistas, making this a perfect cold-weather stroll.

  • Faneuil Hall & Quincy Market – Dining and shopping in this historic hub is especially festive during Christmas, with holiday lights, seasonal street performances, and treats that you just can’t experience in the summer.

  • Harborwalk & Seaport – Winter illuminations and light installations along the waterfront create a magical scene for visitors.

Winter events worth catching

During December and January, Boston is full of festive cheer. After the holidays, indoor and outdoor activities still make the city vibrant:

  • Snowshoeing or winter walking in the Arnold Arboretum – Beautiful after a fresh snowfall, perfect for a quiet outdoor escape.

  • Sledding on Flagstaff Hill in Boston Common – A local favorite after snowstorms and a fun activity for families.

All in all, winter is worth enduring in a city like Boston, which thrives even in the cold, offering a mix of stunning visuals, festive events, and classic New England charm.
