When some folks go grocery shopping, they simply grab the first variety of apples or bag of onions they see—or, perhaps more likely, whatever is on sale. While some might find grocery shopping a chore, for other home cooks, it means searching the shelves for the best quality, the best deals, and the best new thing available every time.
While snack shelves and frozen aisles constantly get innovations, the produce section rarely does. In fact, before the late 2010s, when the grower Row 7 came onto the scene, we rarely saw a new type of garlic or a new variety of cabbage. Today, Row 7 offers plenty of unique vegetables, like dark red Midnight Roma Tomatoes and golden Badger Flame Beets.
Now, joining its extremely popular Upstate Abundance Potatoes, advertised as so creamy you won’t need butter, Row 7 is launching a new type of potato—and it’s supposed to taste like chicken.
Row 7 Debuts Poulette Potatoes
After more than a decade in development, Row 7 has launched its new Poulette Potato. This potato was inspired by a 2013 conversation between French chef Michel Bras and potato breeder Dr. Walter De Jong. Bras described his love for the French heirloom potato, Institut de Beauvais, and De Jong found a way to grow it in the U.S. by crossing it with the classic New York potato.
The resulting seed took years of field and kitchen trials, with more than 150 chefs and farmers weighing in. Now, the Poulette Potato is finally headed to market.
Row 7’s new potatoes have a savory, nutty, roasted flavor and a creamy yet delicate texture. The brand describes them as having the same richness you’d expect from a roast chicken, whether you bake, fry, or mash them into the “best mashed potatoes you’ve ever had.”
Customers have already described the Poulette as the “best potato ever,” with one reviewer praising its “beautiful texture and great, earthy flavor.”
Bags of Row 7’s new Organic Poulette Potatoes are officially hititng Whole Foods Markets in Connecticut, New Jersey, and New York now, where they’ll be available through March. After that, we’ll have to wait until September to enjoy the roasted flavor again.
Many customers were disappointed to learn that Row 7’s potatoes will be sold in only three states for their inaugural season. However, you might recall that its Upstate Abundance Potatoes debuted exclusively in the Northeast before expanding to more regions, so we’re crossing our fingers that these savory, roasty potatoes will hit more shelves next year.
