Founding Member of the Zombies, 81, Returns to Stage After Stroke, Receives Standing Ovation from Fans

As both a founding member of the Zombies and his eponymous band Argent, singer-songwriter Rod Argent is responsible for some of the most iconic songs of all time, from “She’s Not There” to “Hold Your Head Up” and many more.

Unfortunately, Argent, now 81, was forced to step back from performing after suffering a stroke in 2024. Consequently, it was a pretty huge deal when he returned to the stage for the first time this week to join Zombies bandmate Colin Blunstone at St Albans Cathedral in England as part of the band’s yearly Begin Here Festival…and fans were so thrilled, they greeted him with a standing ovation.

Though Argent was “really nervous” beforehand, according to the BBC, the audience’s warm reception helped to relieve his anxiety.

“I felt people were all trying to make me feel at home in the best possible way, and then after each song they all stood up and cheered…It was very emotional,” he said.

Blunstone agreed with Argent about the crowd’s enthusiasm.

“It was very emotional and I think the crowd felt it and we certainly felt it on stage…It was a wonderful reaction to him,” he said, adding, “They were a wonderful audience. They really, really were and they lifted us…It was very moving.”

According to Argent, his condition is improving since the stroke, though he still has some trouble with speaking.

“In my head, if I’m just thinking through things, I’ve got absolutely no lack of fluency at all,” he said. “But when I speak, sometimes I lose my thread, lose where I’m going…but it is getting better.”

Even so, Argent isn’t planning to return to the road.

“I want to spend more time with my wife now really, because I was away all the time before,” he explained, praising her support throughout his recovery.

“Over the last two years she’s been wonderful because she’s got a few health issues herself, but she was with me when I had the stroke,” he said.

Sounds like the fans who happened to catch this rare Zombies reunion were very lucky indeed.
