Alas, the 2027 Met Gala has a new theme after the Costume Institute scrapped its planned John Galliano exhibition. Titled “Extraordinary: Fashion and the Poetics of the Everyday,” the show turns its attention to the clothes and materials we might otherwise overlook and what designers can make of them. The gala takes place May 3, with the exhibition opening to the public six days later. It’s a marked shift from the theatrical world of Galliano’s designs and could mean that we see jeans and (gasp!) T-shirts in droves during the biggest night in fashion.
Here, everything to know about the 2027 Met Gala theme, dress code, and more.
What is the 2027 Met Gala dress code?
The dress code has yet to be announced. It will take its cue from the exhibition, as is tradition, but what that means for the red carpet remains to be seen. “I want visitors to leave looking differently at the clothes they arrived in,” Andrew Bolton, curator in charge of the Costume Institute, said in a statement of the exhibit. “With a greater sense of what is worth noticing, valuing, and caring for.”
How does the dress code connect to the exhibition?
Each year, the Met Gala’s dress code gives guests a way to interpret the Costume Institute’s spring exhibition. The 2027 prompt has yet to be announced, but the show’s focus on everyday clothing and materials—from jeans and T-shirts to paper, aluminum, and plastic—offers plenty of clues.
The exhibition will bring together over 200 pieces, roughly a third from the museum’s collection and the rest on loan or donated. Among them: Charles James’s ’30s couture puffer coat; pieces from Marc Jacobs’s grunge-era Perry Ellis collections; Brooke Shields’s Calvin Klein jeans, made famous by the brand’s 1980 ad; Junya Watanabe’s take on the leather biker jacket, filtered through the codes of Dior’s New Look; and Matthieu Blazy’s trompe l’oeil leather “jeans” for Bottega Veneta. The show will also include pieces that have been upcycled, recycled, and otherwise remade.
How could attendees translate the theme into actual looks?
Despite the pomp and circumstance of the event, everyday dressing is already embedded in the Met Gala lexicon. At the 2026 gala, Bhavitha Mandava slipped into silk jeans and a three-quarter zip-up by Chanel; Kim Kardashian wore a head-to-toe Balenciaga T-shirt dress in 2021; and Doja Cat took the idea further in a wet-look Vetements tee dress in 2024. For 2027, expect the eventual dress code to invite that same kind of transformation: familiar pieces, reworked for the red carpet.
Who is hosting the 2027 Met Gala?
