Cocooning proportions were rife on the fall/winter 2026 runways. From billowing dresses at Stella McCartney and Jil Sander to long, rounded sweater vests at Chanel and expressive, cloud-shaped trousers at Chloé, the message was clear: eye-catching silhouettes are in.
When it comes to denim, the cocoon silhouette thrives. Not quite as dramatic as barrel-leg styles and occasionally featuring gentle pleating, the subtle banana-inspired shape is made to flatter the female form. Sitting snugly on the hips and gently blossoming out, they taper only slightly at the bottoms, allowing plenty of space for the wearer to move freely.
Horseshoe-shaped jeans first gained popularity on Alaïa’s spring/summer 2025 runway for their ability to add interest to an otherwise minimalist look—and the cocoon silhouette moves the trend on, offering a subtle tweak to the runway-inspired style.
In terms of styling, they are ideal for autumn days. Throw them on with a V-neck cashmere knit and a pair of pumps, and what would have been a simple ensemble is transformed by the directional curvature of the denim. For evening, watch them do all the heavy lifting, turning a cami top and kitten heels into a dinner-ready outfit.
It comes as no surprise that Japanese high-street stalwart Muji, known for its refined homeware and wardrobe solutions, has created a perfect pair of cocoon jeans. The lightweight denim features a slightly curved leg shape and the kapok-blend fabric feels soft to wear, while keeping the structure of classic denim.
As for a slightly more substantial take, Topshop’s pair features a front pleat detail that helps to create a sculpted, dimensional shape through the leg. The oversized proportions and gently tapered ankle create an effortlessly cool look, while the mid-rise waist and oversized, sculptural leg give them an edge that will swiftly upgrade your outfits.
If you’re ready to level up your denim drawer, you really can’t go wrong with either pair. Shop them below.
