Ryan Gosling is one of the few Hollywood leading men who can actually pull off a music career if he wanted to, but he’s too busy starring in the upcoming Star Wars Starfighter or planning a turn in Marvel Studios Ghost Rider.

For many of us lifelong fans, one of his underrated side projects was his one-album stint in the folksy indie duo he started with writer Zach Shields (Godzilla: King of the Monsters), Dead Man’s Bones. Their self-titled 2009 release has become a fixture on playlists during Halloween season. Singles from their Gothic folk-tinged rock and roll crooning in tracks like “Lose Your Soul” and “In The Room Where You Sleep” have been featured in horror films such as The Conjuring and, most recently, They Will Kill You.

Every year for the better part of a decade, Gosling’s wife, Eva Mendes, reshares the music during spooky season as a fan, with the band’s followers up in her comments (raises hand) asking nicely if her husband will ever resurrect Dead Man’s Bones. Especially during the LA LA Land and Barbie years, when we foolish mortals wondered if the singing bug might have bitten him again to make more, but settled for his soundtrack needle drops. And yet–it appears the spirits have finally awakened and materialized something special in the dead of night.

After Mendes teased that Gosling made good on his promise to her that he would, leading up to the first single from the band in 17 years, “Lost in the Night,” which was released today. What can’t she do? In between mom goals, entrepreneurial ventures, and fashion collabs, the cinephile curation on Mendes’ page would often veer into classic horror and invite more discourse around her helping summon the band back from the dead, and it’s happening (queue us running around the haunted house).
Mendes shared the single’s image on her Instagram, which features the actress cheek to cheek with a skeleton, and shared, “My new favorite song is hauntingly romantic”. We stan a powerful bruja who conjured up this Halloween gift, a beautiful synth serenade that was worth the wait. However, it is a fan edit Mendes shared (credit to:@yabani.aep), setting the song to clips from 2012’s A Place Beyond the Pines, the film Gosling courted her on while shooting that has us swooning over their love story.
In the comments, she wrote that Gosling sang it to her at that time, and she asked him to record it. Okay, well, that was 2011, so we’re wondering how many songs Dead Man’s Bones has to bring back from the grave with them. The fans want to know, and for those of us who have wished for live shows, we’re driving by cemeteries in LA with EMF readers and Ouija boards to find out if spirits from regions beyond know of any secret Halloween shows.
