Yellowstone Issues a Final Deadline Before Banning All Cars

A late-fall visit to Yellowstone National Park comes with a deadline for drivers.

The National Park Service is preparing to close most park roads to regular vehicles as winter approaches, restricting access to some of the country’s best-known geothermal attractions and scenic routes.

The change does not shut down the entire park, but it will force visitors to rethink how they get around.

Anyone planning an October road trip or a winter wildlife getaway should understand which entrances remain accessible and when specialized winter transportation begins.

Nov. 1 Winter Closures Shut Down West, South and East Entrances

The National Park Service announced on October 21 that most roads and three entrances will close to regular vehicle traffic starting Sunday, November 1, 2026.

Saturday, October 31, is the final day visitors can drive most of Yellowstone’s roads this year.

The seasonal closures prepare the park for winter operations, when snow and ice make many routes unsuitable for ordinary vehicles.

The closures affect:

  • West Entrance: Near West Yellowstone, Montana.

  • South Entrance: The gateway from the Jackson, Wyoming, area.

  • East Entrance: The route from Cody, Wyoming.

Most roads connecting the park’s major attractions will also be closed to regular vehicle traffic. The NPS says the road between Tower Fall and Canyon Junction, crossing Dunraven Pass, is scheduled to remain open through October 31, weather permitting.

Visitors planning a final autumn drive should check the official Yellowstone road status page before setting out.

Weather can force earlier closures, and road conditions can change without notice.

North and Northeast Entrances Preserve Lamar Valley Road Access

The North Entrance near Gardiner, Montana, and the Northeast Entrance near Cooke City and Silver Gate, Montana, remain connected by a road open to regular vehicles year-round, weather permitting.

The route passes through several areas that remain accessible during winter, including:

Lamar Valley is known for wildlife watching, including opportunities to look for wolves and bison. However, reaching these areas in winter requires preparation for snow, ice and rapidly changing driving conditions.

The continuing road access does not mean the rest of Yellowstone remains reachable by car. Visitors hoping to see Old Faithful and other attractions in the park’s interior will need to investigate winter transportation options.

Dec. 15 Oversnow Season Launches Snowcoach and Snowmobile Tours

The park’s winter transportation season begins on December 15, 2026, when designated roads open to limited oversnow travel by snowmobiles and snowcoaches.

Authorized winter tours offer a way to reach parts of Yellowstone that cars cannot access. However, services are limited, and visitors should arrange transportation and accommodation before arriving.

The National Park Service’s winter travel guide lists winter access information, road restrictions and available services. The park warns that many facilities close during the winter season, so lodging, dining and visitor services should be checked separately.

Visitors driving during fall and winter should also carry cold-weather essentials, keep their fuel tanks full and maintain flexible itineraries. Current conditions are available by calling 307-344-2117 or texting 82190 to 888-777 to sign up for Yellowstone road alerts.

Although the main summer driving season is ending, communities around Yellowstone remain open year-round. Gardiner, West Yellowstone, Cooke City, Cody and Jackson can provide bases for seasonal recreation, depending on the route and conditions.
