Will there be a season 5 of “The Diplomat”? What’s next for the Netflix hit after that season 4 cliffhanger

Key Points

  • The Diplomat has officially been renewed for season 5.

  • Creator Debora Cahn spoke with EW about the season 4 finale’s dramatic walkout and Hal’s cliffhanger.

  • Season 5 could return as early as fall 2027.

Keri Russell has had quite enough of President Grace Penn’s (Allison Janney) administration on Netflix’s The Diplomat. And, after four seasons of diplomatic damage control, she’s finally doing something about it.

Russell stars as Kate Wyler, a U.S. ambassador whose job involves navigating international crises and the increasingly complicated business of being married to Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell), a man with some rather ambitious political plans of his own. Four seasons in, we know a few things about The Diplomat for sure: Kate is very good at making a mess, Hal is very good at making it worse, and somehow the two of them keep finding new ways to put the entire world on edge.

Season 4, though, left Kate in particularly uncharted territory. And after that season finale? We still have questions running through our brains. Fortunately, we won’t have to spend the rest of our lives refreshing Netflix.

Here’s everything we know about The Diplomat season 5.

Will there be a Diplomat season 5?

Yes! Netflix renewed The Diplomat for a fifth season on October 29, 2026, exactly two weeks after all eight episodes of season 4 arrived on the streamer.

After Grace’s increasingly dangerous decisions threaten to send the U.S. hurtling toward war with one of its closest allies, Kate resigns as U.S. ambassador to the U.K. at the G7 summit. Billie Appiah (Nana Mensah) and Secretary of State Miguel Ganon (Miguel Sandoval) follow her out. Then, in a move that even Kate doesn’t see coming, Vice President Hal appears outside with them. Kate gives him the opportunity to address the press, and he steps forward. But just as he’s about to speak, the screen cuts to black.

Series creator Debora Cahn told Entertainment Weekly that the walkout was the destination she had in mind for season 4 from the beginning. “I always walk into the writers’ room with a plan for what we’re driving toward in the season,” she said. In the first three seasons, that plan changed as the writers found better ideas or the story took an unexpected turn. This time, she knew where she wanted to land. “With season 4, I knew that I wanted to do that. I knew I wanted to see them walk out. I didn’t know how we were gonna get there, but I did know that I wanted to go there.”

What will The Diplomat season 5 be about?

Netflix has not released an official synopsis for season 5, but the finale has given the writers plenty to work with. Kate, Billie, and Ganon have walked away from the administration, while Hal has joined them in a dramatic public break with Grace. So what will they do now that they’re no longer trying to save the administration from the inside? And how will Grace respond to losing some of her most powerful allies?

There’s also the small matter of what Hal was about to say. Kate had initially been expected to address the press about their decision to walk out, but handed the microphone to her husband instead. Speaking to TV Insider, Cahn explained that the choice was about the difference in their respective positions. “[It’s] the difference between a diplomat who most of the world has no idea who she is [and the vice president],” she said. “He’s the most powerful character on that chessboard.”

Cahn added that while Kate can “create an earthquake” from inside the administration, Hal has considerably more influence outside it. “The statement about what just happened and why out of the mouth of the vice president is just way, way, way stronger.”

The finale cuts to black just as Hal begins to speak, leaving us with no idea what he actually said. Given that The Diplomat has a habit of picking up its new seasons where the previous ones left off, season 5 could finally give us the answer.

Netflix has not announced the season 5 cast, but we’d expect the show’s central players to return. That includes Keri Russell as Kate Wyler, Rufus Sewell as Hal Wyler, Allison Janney as President Grace Penn, Bradley Whitford as Todd Penn, Nana Mensah as Billie Appiah, Miguel Sandoval as Miguel Ganon, Ato Essandoh as Stuart Hayford, and Ali Ahn as Eidra Park.

Jodie Whittaker’s Bethan Vaughn also looks set to be an important presence after her introduction as the new U.K. prime minister in season 4. Her return has not yet been officially confirmed, however.

Is there a Diplomat season 5 release date?

The Diplomat season 5 does not have an official release date yet. But the series has settled into a pretty reliable autumn schedule: season 2 arrived in October 2024, season 3 in October 2025, and season 4 on Oct. 15, 2026.

If that pattern holds, season 5 could arrive in fall 2027. That’s only an estimate, though. Netflix has not announced when production will begin or when the new episodes will premiere.
