The black puffer jacket is dead. The statement coat killed it. Somehow, someway, it’s never been a better time to go all out with outerwear, and brands are capitalizing on details that make these one-and-done pieces feel extra special. Think: colorful faux fur trims, luminous brocades, elegant vintage-inspired fastenings, and textiles that mimic tapestries and even tassels. The statement coat offers a strong point of view and also doubles down on tactile texture at a time when we all want to feel something.
You only have to look at the runways to see the evidence. For the fall/winter 2026 season, there were Gucci’s, Bottega Veneta’s, and Giorgio Armani’s extravagant furry creations and Celine’s and Anna Sui’s luscious animal prints. Miu Miu remixed its ’90s hits with artfully distressed, shearling-lined wonders.
And of course, the trend continued into spring/summer 2027 with lighter, more colorful statement coats à la Tory Burch, fringed duster capes from Anna Sui, and cocooning beauties from Issey Miyake. Earlier this year, Hill House Home also traded its Nap Dresses for luminous brocade jackets and Rixo emerged as a destination for jaw-dropping vintage-inspired statement coats. And one could argue that Conner Ives’s demi-couture upcycled fur silk robes sparked a slew of inspired fur-trimmed robes, even if Mary-Kate Olsen’s 2013 Met Gala coat was the blueprint.
Still, niche brands are creating some of the most unique statement coats of our times. Take, for example, Carelli, launched in 2025 by Anna Carels. The label creates dreamy, animal-printed jackets trimmed in faux fur, like its bambi option with a darling fawn-like print. Or The Design Studio, which is a mother-daughter team that makes brocade and horse-printed jackets with chunky faux fur cuffs.
Likewise, ByVINNIK, founded by opera singer Suzanne Vinnik in 2019, doesn’t just make clothing in the opera trend style; Vinnik lives it. Her over-the-top, colorful coats have features like cocoon collars and reversible jacquards, made for every day.
“Depending on where you live, a coat becomes your mode of transportation, your status symbol, and your way of telling the world who you are without saying a word,” Vinnik tells ELLE. “You can wear the most fabulous outfit underneath, but throw on a sad black or beige coat and suddenly you disappear into the background. A statement coat lets you express exactly who you are, what you stand for, and how you walk into any situation with confidence, while also serving a purpose. It can be bold. It can be loud. It can be over the top. Sometimes, the coat is the outfit!”
This season, the forecast calls for statement coats.
