What to do during the winter months in the Mountain State

BECKLEY, WV (WVNS) — With winter just a few weeks away, people will be planning their off season trips to the Mountain State.

Snowshoe ski season opening day pushed back

West Virginia has several opportunities for wintertime fun, said Lisa Strader Executive Director of Visit Southern West Virginia.

She said people love coming up for winter cabin getaways and cozy nights at local restaurants.

One of the biggest draws, she said, takes place at a higher elevation.

“It means it’s ski time! So, we’re very fortunate to have Winterplace Ski resort in our backyard. It’s one of the most accessible ski resorts, if not the most accessible ski resort on the East Coast. So, we get a lot of people coming from the south coming up here to ski,” said Strader.

Strader said winter is one of the best times to travel to southern West Virginia.

She said many of the cabins and state parks will have special off season deals for their cabins.

Strader also recommends doing some winter hiking in the area because without the foliage around, you will see parts of the state you have not seen before.
