This Underrated Virginia Bakery Is Serving Costa Rican Specialties

You may be more likely to associate tropical pastries and strong Costa Rican coffee with Miami than the Shenandoah Valley, but tucked into the charming town of Front Royal, Virginia, is a bakery worth pulling over for. At Melania’s Gourmet, Costa Rican-born pastry chef Melania Castegnaro is serving delicate fruit-forward desserts, specialty lattes, and globally inspired pastries that feel entirely unexpected in this corner of Virginia.

How A Costa Rican Pastry Chef Ended Up In Front Royal

If Virginia is for lovers, then Melania Castegnaro’s story fits right in. After falling in love with and marrying a Front Royal native while working as an executive pastry chef in Washington, DC, the two decided to build a life—and later a bakery—in the Shenandoah Valley.

“We chose Front Royal for its affordability, proximity to DC, and the lack of other world-class pastry concepts in the Shenandoah Valley,” Castegnaro explained. “When a prime downtown location on the main road to Shenandoah National Park became available, we knew it was the perfect fit.”

After opening in 2023, the bakery and café, housed in a restored brick home, quickly earned a loyal following among locals while also becoming a welcome stop for travelers exploring the region.

How Costa Rican Flavors Meet Southern Comfort Food

From rich, caramel-like dulce de leche to bright passionfruit, sweet mango, and creamy coconut, Melania’s Gourmet draws heavily from Castegnaro’s Costa Rican roots. But perhaps the most important ingredient woven throughout the menu is one Americans might not immediately associate with Costa Rica: coffee.

Costa Rica is known for producing some of the world’s finest coffee, prized for its bright acidity and naturally sweet flavor. Unsurprisingly, coffee plays a starring role at Melania’s Gourmet, appearing not only in desserts but also throughout the bakery’s creative beverage program.

“I infuse many desserts, such as tiramisu, coffee cakes, and bonbons, with Costa Rican dark roast coffee,” Castegnaro says. “Our coffee, espresso, and beverage program has also become a staple of the brand, featuring unique espresso mocktails like the Turkish Latte, Tiramacciatto, and Whiskey Barrel Latte.”

With 31 coffee-based drinks on the menu, choosing just one can be a challenge. Some creations feel unexpected, like the Tiramacciato, made with mascarpone milk and finished with a meringue topping, or floral lattes infused with rose syrup. Others nod to the bakery’s Virginia home, including the Whiskey Barrel Latte, which combines bourbon brown sugar syrup, vanilla foam, and smoked salt.

The bakery’s most popular items reflect that same blend of Costa Rican flavors and local influences. “Our most popular items are the bacon, egg, and cheese biscuit—a Shenandoah favorite often compared to a breakfast hamburger—and the mango chocolate cheesecake,” Castegnaro says.

Why This Bakery Is Worth The Detour

It’s not just the 50-plus pastries, paninis, pies, and specialty drinks that make Melania’s Gourmet worth a detour. The café itself feels like an invitation to slow down, whether you’re fueling up before a day in Shenandoah National Park or lingering over coffee after a morning hike.

Castegnaro says creating a welcoming atmosphere was just as important as developing the menu. “We infuse ‘love and magic’ into everything we do,” she says. “We spent a lot of time creating a comfortable, warm, welcoming, and loving Bohemian Jungle environment for guests to enjoy while they spend time with us.”
