When the World Ski Awards first launched in 2013, it named Val Thorens in the French Alps the best ski resort in the world. Now, the mountain is once again at the top.
Located in the Tarentaise Valley of the French Alps, Val Thornes is known for its high altitude skiing, sitting at more than 7,500 feet above sea level. The resort is also part of the famous Les 3 Vallées (or the three valleys), which is made up of seven different ski areas, including Courchevel, Méribel, Brides-les-Bains, and more. Together, they create the world’s largest interconnected ski area, boasting nearly 400 miles of runs.
The World Ski Awards crowned Val Thornes the best thanks to its resort facilities, accommodation options, and “setting the global standard for lift infrastructure.”
“This year’s winners reflect the dynamic nature of our industry, showcasing an ideal blend of luxury, innovation and sustainability,” Sion Rapson, the managing director of World Ski Awards, said in a statement shared with Travel + Leisure, adding the awards recognize “the resorts, chalets, hotels, agents and travel providers that are lifting the global ski sector to new heights.”
Rapson said the awards received a record number of votes, calling it “encouraging on the eve of the upcoming season.”
To come up with its ranking, a mix of ski industry professionals and actual skiers voted on their favorite resorts, ski hotels, and ski tour operators. Winners come from countries all around the world, including Europe, Asia, the Americas, and beyond.
In the United States, Utah’s Stein Eriksen Lodge Deer Valley took the title of the world’s best ski hotel. Set in the exclusive Deer Valley resort area, the property features luxury stays with crackling fireplaces, an incredible spa with outdoor heated pools and hot tubs to soothe sore muscles, the chance to take in the mountain views as you dine in outdoor globes, and more.
Val Thornes’ five-star Hôtel Le Pashmina was also recognized as the world’s best ski boutique hotel for 2025. The upscale stay features just 45 rooms and suites, each with access to the property’s wellness features like a heated indoor pool and both indoor and outdoor Jacuzzis.
In Japan, the Nikko Style Niseko HANAZONO was named the world’s best new ski hotel. Located in the larger Niseko United ski resort, the property boasts 234 rooms, including 13 suites, plus a traditional onsen to relax in after the slopes.
