This Coastal Region in Croatia Is Full of Beautiful Islands and Historic Towns—Here’s How to Explore It

Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast, known for its crystalline Adriatic waters, ancient walled towns, and sun-soaked islands, offers one of Europe’s most luxurious coastal escapes. Whether you’re docking on a private yacht or checking into a luxury seaside resort, it delivers a unique blend of cultural heritage and modern indulgence. Having helped plan high-end itineraries to the Dalmatian Coast for over a decade, here are my tips for the perfect trip.

Where to Begin

Start in Dubrovnik, the shimmering pearl of the Adriatic. For a panoramic perspective, the Dubrovnik Cable Car offers magnificent views of the city’s ancient rooftops and the distant Elaphite Islands. As the sun sets, enjoy a cliffside dinner with a glass of Dingač wine and soak in the fiery horizon.

The following day, sail to the Elaphite Islands, a trio of serene escapes. Continue to St. Pietro, a secluded islet perfect for swimming, a chef-prepared onboard picnic, or simply enjoying the peace. A private sailing experience offers a luxurious and unhurried way to explore the coast.

Before departing Dubrovnik, be sure to stop for a wine tasting in the garden at M’arden. Tucked within the city walls, this ivy-cloaked courtyard offers rare local wines in a tranquil setting few visitors ever discover.

Where to Explore

Head north to Split and visit Diocletian’s Palace in the city center. This UNESCO-listed ancient Roman complex is now brimming with cafes and boutiques, blending ancient grandeur with contemporary life. From Split, consider a private transfer to Krka National Park. There, scenic boardwalks wind through forested terrain to reveal spectacular waterfalls and swimming spots.

Island hopping is an essential part of any visit to Croatia. Charter a private yacht to explore at your own pace. The beach clubs and lavender fields in Hvar draw a glamorous crowd, while Vis offers a more tranquil vibe, ideal for diving, fresh seafood, and hidden coves.

Wine lovers should dedicate a day to the Pelješac Peninsula. Private vineyard tours, paired with oysters freshly harvested from the bay, deliver a uniquely Croatian indulgence.

Wellness seekers find bliss at resorts like Maslina on Hvar. Their garden-to-spa program uses homegrown herbs in treatments inspired by traditional Adriatic rituals. With sea-view yoga and holistic therapies, it’s the perfect retreat.

Where to Stay

In Dubrovnik, Villa Dubrovnik is a top choice for its sleek design and unmatched views of the old city. Its private villas offer ultimate privacy with a full staff. On Hvar, Palace Elisabeth is a go-to for historic elegance in a prime location, while Maslina Resort caters to those seeking sustainable luxury and seclusion on the island’s quieter side.

Where to Eat

Croatia’s coastal cuisine is a joy to explore. In Dubrovnik, Michelin-starred Restaurant 360 serves gourmet dining with fortress views. In Split, Zoi offers Mediterranean-fusion cuisine right on the Riva promenade. On Hvar, Laganini Lounge Bar & Fish House is beloved for its fresh seafood and stylish setting. And on Vis, Konoba Jastožera, a rustic over-the-water spot, serves lobster caught right at your table.

Whether you’re savoring fine wine in a hidden garden or sailing into the sunset aboard a private yacht, the Dalmatian Coast is an experience in  history and luxury, nature and indulgence, all in perfect harmony.
