You won’t find many Gilded Age mansions left in New York City, but one is available on the Upper West Side. New York Giants backup quarterback Russell Wilson, recently toured the property, according to the New York Post.
The residence has an interesting history. From the 1940s to the 1990s, it served as the headquarters for the House of Free Russia. It had been owned by exiled Russian prince Sergei Belosselsky-Belozersky, according to the Post. It was then purchased for $1.4 million in 1999, according to Zillow, by Randall Jackson. Jackson has been the owner ever since.
Don’t Miss:
The mansion was put on the market in January 2013 for $50 million. But after over a year without a buyer, it was removed in April 2014. In April, it was listed again, but for $29.75 million, an over 40% reduction.
“Step into a work of art with an exceptional history designed by Janes and Leo Architects c.1901 which has been completely restored with your every comfort in mind,” says the Douglas Elliman listing held by Lydia Sussek. “This extraordinary property presents a rare opportunity to experience classic yet modern refined urban living in one of New York City’s most beautiful homes for a lifestyle of sophistication and privacy, whilst also being livable, with ample separation of space for you and your guests…”

Many Gilded Age mansions in New York City have been converted into museums and other uses. So, this Upper West Side property offers a rare opportunity. The Gilded Age, between around 1870 and 1910, was a time of expansion for different industries and transportation. This was when notable families, like the Vanderbilts, Rockefellers, Morgans and Fords, made their fortunes, according to Newport Mansions. Wealthy families built these extravagant mansions in New York City and beyond. The one that Wilson toured is among them.
The 12,375-square-foot limestone home features Beaux-Arts architecture, including Doric columns at the entrance, Roman brick and terra cotta façade and tall ceilings. It boasts seven bedrooms, seven full bathrooms and seven half bathrooms. There are various entertaining areas, including formal spaces, as well as a movie room and several dens. There are eight fireplaces throughout the property.

There’s a private service door that takes you to the lower level, where you’ll find two sky-lit staff offices, a wine cellar, a laundry area, a storage space and more. Another stand-out area is the primary bedroom that takes up an entire floor. It has a spa-like bathroom that’s covered in marble and onyx, a dressing room with custom closets, a private den with a separate space to be a library or home office and private terrace with a seating room to admire the view of the Hudson River. There’s a total of six floors, so the commercial-grade elevator that holds at least eight people is appreciated.
In March, Wilson signed a one-year contract with the Giants for $10.5 million, according to the NFL. The 10-time Pro Bowl quarterback was the starter at the beginning of the season; however, he was benched in September after the Giants lost the first three games. Jaxson Dart is now the team’s starting quarterback.
