There’s a new way to get to Hawaii from popular city for the first time in 20 years

Hawaii-bound passengers now have more options in California than the bustling (and oft overcrowded) LAX. According to Alaska Airlines, the company will begin flying out of a San Fernando Valley based airport, which will allow people to fly into Hawaii without forcing them to brave the crowds and traffic they currently have to face when flying out of LAX.

The happy news is two decades in the making, since the region hasn’t had non-stop flights to The Aloha State in 20 years. Here’s everything we know.

Alaska Airlines will now fly out of Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR)

People will now be able to catch a flight to Honolulu (HNL) when they fly out of Hollywood Burbank (BUR). The airport is located in the San Fernando Valley, and it will begin offering direct flights to HNL beginning May 13, 2026.

According to the Travel Off Path blog, the airline will begin daily flights and a summer seasonal service, which will be carried out using the company’s Boeing 737. Previously, people were forced to choose between LAX or Orange County when they wanted to reach HNL, but beginning in May, they’ll have a new option.

The change means more than less traffic and smaller crowds, according to the blog, since the airport also offers other perks like:

  • A shorter distance to the gate

  • Quicker security checkpoints

  • Much more convenient for travelers located in Burbank, Pasadena, Glendale, and the Valley

Hollywood Burbank Airport has undergone several changes

The airport has done more than just a new flight to its lineup, BUR is also currently under construction. The facility has added a new terminal that will include 14 gates, and it’s scheduled to open October 2026. Additionally, there will be more airlines making stops at the airport over the next few years. Airlines like JetBlue, Breeze, and Allegiant are among those that are planning to start adding BUR to its lists of arrival and departure spots.

You can book tickets from BUR to HNL today

While the airport currently has a lot of exciting things in the works, there’s one thing you can do today: Book your ticket from BUR to HNL. If you’re planning a trip to Hawaii in or after May 2026, you can already purchase your seat on an Alaska Airlines flight. While you won’t get to take off quiet yet, you can be among some of the first to do so as soon as the new flights begin.

Of course, you don’t have to fly out of BUR to get to enjoy a Hawaiian vacation. The other areas in California that currently service The Aloha State appear poised to keep doing so, this will just give some travelers (like those living in Southern California) more options when it comes time to head out for their dream Hawaiian vacation. And who knows, maybe it will help ease some of the congestion around LAX as a result!
