Christmas in New York City is magical. But there’s a downside to its popularity with a new study naming the iconic ice skating rink at Rockefeller Center the most overcrowded Christmas attraction in the entire world.
Nothing screams the festive holiday season like The Rink at Rockefeller Center, but more than 41 percent of visitors who went mentioned crowd-related issues, according to a study from eSIM company Holafly. Complaints specifically centered around long lines, limited skating space, and a “constant stream of spectators lining the rink’s edges making it difficult to access the rink.”
And it wasn’t just the rink that was full of people: Rockefeller Center as a whole actually came in fourth on the list as the most crowded Christmas attraction in the world.

The study was based on English-language online reviews from November, December, and January.
Regardless of the crowds, Rockefeller Center is a classic destination and should still remain on your New York City winter trip itinerary. Plus, for some travelers, the hustle and bustle is part of the festive charm. That said, there are plenty of similar, far less crowded festive activities worth checking out elsewhere in the Big Apple should you want higher odds for a quieter visit.
For Ice Skating
New York is full of amazing ice skating rinks sprinkled throughout the city. For those staying near Midtown, Central Park’s Wollman Rink is a great option with tickets starting at $16 for off-peak days. All skate rentals cost $12.
The Rink at Bryant Park is also a wonderful alternative and is actually free to access with skate rentals starting at about $18. After going for a turn around the ice, check out the holiday market complete with festive eats and “jewel box” kiosks selling charming gifts.
For those venturing downtown, there’s The Rink at Brookfield Place, which offers 60 minute sessions starting at $15 and skate rentals starting at $5.
For Cinematic Moments
Many New York City trips are inspired by seeing the city onscreen. From “Home Alone 2” to “Elf,” classics like the original “Miracle on 34th Street,” and more, there are plenty of spots to capture a cinematic moment. For “Home Alone 2” fans, head to The Champagne Bar at The Plaza hotel where you can sample oysters and sip brut while overlooking Fifth Avenue and The Pulitzer Fountain.
Fans of “Elf” can capture the magic of Gimbels at any of New York’s real department stores, including Macy’s, Bergdorf Goodman, and Saks Fifth Avenue.
And if you’re more of a “When Harry Met Sally” type, head down to Katz’s Delicatessen for a memorable meal—you can have what she’s having.
For Maximum Christmas Vibes
You can’t beat the festive energy at holiday markets like Bryant Park and Union Square. Full of great food and delightful gifts, they are each more than worth a visit even if they do tend to get crowded.
Later, head to Lillie’s Victorian Establishment to immerse yourself in holiday cheer thanks to elaborate wall-to-wall decor, or grab some schnitzel and a beer at Rolf’s, a German spot that bills itself as the city’s “most festive restaurant.”
A newer addition to the holiday scene can be found at Hudson Yards where visitors can enjoy a brilliant light display, free photos with Santa, and live pop-up performances through Jan. 7, 2026.
