Few places in the Caribbean blend history and natural beauty as seamlessly as Charlotte Amalie, the capital of the U.S. Virgin Islands. Known for its beautiful waterfront lined with colorful Danish-era architecture, this port city is a gateway for experiencing culture and history. Whether you want to learn history or indulge in retail therapy, this underrated tourist destination to visit in the Caribbean has something for everyone.

Charlotte Amalie is located in St. Thomas, and to get there, you can take a flight to Cyril E. King Airport (STT), which is an eight-minute drive from the city center. The marina in St. Thomas is also a major stop for cruise ships. Charlotte Amalie was founded by the Danish in 1672 and named after Queen Charlotte Amalie of Denmark. The town was a busy port due to the trade in the Caribbean. In the 19th century, St. Thomas was occupied by the British. The history of Charlotte Amalie has been preserved, with many of the city’s buildings reflecting the Danish colonial influence with cobblestone streets and historic churches.

With European influence, where Danish colonial architecture blends with the Caribbean vibrancy, Charlotte Amalie is one of the most lovely American cities that feels like popular European destinations. One of the top highlights of the capital is Fort Christian, a popular landmark built by the Danish in the 1680s. This red brick fortress was once a governor’s residence, police headquarters, and prison. It is now a museum with old Danish relics, artifacts, books, and furniture. Take a tour of the museum to see various exhibits, and make sure you get to the roof to see the cannons. Another gem to visit is the 99 Steps, a historic staircase built from bricks brought by Danish and British ships in the 1700s. Walking the steps gives you beautiful views of the harbor. At the top of the steps is Blackbeard’s Castle, a 17th-century watchtower named after a Caribbean pirate. While the castle is closed due to damage caused by a hurricane, you can still admire the exterior of the tower.

Stop by St. Thomas Synagogue, a popular destination that meticulously combines Jewish tradition with Caribbean architecture. This second-oldest synagogue in the Western Hemisphere has sand-covered floors, which symbolize the biblical tradition and perseverance of Jewish refugees who fled Europe centuries ago. You can take a break from your tour at the Emancipation Garden, which has shaded benches. This garden is where the Emancipation Proclamation of 1848 was publicly read to free enslaved people on the island.

Just about three miles northeast of Charlotte Amalie is one of the most gorgeous beaches in the Caribbean, Magens Bay Beach. The white sandy beach is known for its crystal-clear and turquoise waters, making it a paradise for beach lovers who are into swimming, paddleboarding, or kayaking. In addition, with its dense tropical surroundings, you can take a leisurely stroll on the powdery white sand beach or lounge with a book as you soak in the soothing ocean breeze. Private cabanas, beach chairs, and umbrellas are available for rent on site. If hiking is your thing, follow the hiking trails that start at the beach, leading to the forests, passing through mangroves.

Another bucket list adventure in St. Thomas is taking a scenic ride on the cable car from Skyride to Paradise Point. This cable car takes you up to 700 feet above sea level while rewarding you with beautiful views of the Charlotte Amalie harbor and the Caribbean Sea, alongside shops and cafés. If you still have some juice left, consider a quick island-hopping trip to Water Island, just a 10-minute ferry cruise from Crown Bay Marina in Charlotte Amalie. One of the main drawers of travelers to the island is Honeymoon Beach, a secluded remote sandy stretch with palm trees ideal for relaxing as you recharge. With opportunities for lounging, sunbathing, swimming, kayaking, and playing beach volleyball or tennis, the pretty white sand beach at this hidden Caribbean Island promises pure relaxation. Umbrellas, beach chairs, and boating equipment are available for rent at Dinghy’s Beach Bar & Grill. You can also refuel at the beachfront facility if you feel like grabbing a bite. Menu items include corn tortilla chips, salads, sandwiches, and plates like jerk chicken. If you prefer to take a bite in Charlotte Amalie, pause by Green House Restaurant & Bar in St. Thomas right on the waterfront when you get back from your island-hopping escapades. Choose from shrimp tacos, fried chicken dishes, and vegetarian options from the extensive menu.
