Taye Diggs opened up to PEOPLE about what he’s looking for in a relationship
He said he’s “ready” and “open” to finding love again

Taye Diggs is opening up about what he’s looking for in a relationship.
The actor, 55, spoke to PEOPLE about his dating life while stepping out to Lifetime’s Love of a Lifetime Celebration at the White Rabbit Lounge in Hollywood, Calif., on Wednesday, Nov. 4. He shared that he’s “definitely single” at the moment, explaining, “I’m so on the move, I don’t even have time to date.”
“But I’m very much looking forward to when I can buckle down and focus on somebody else — other than myself and my son,” he added.
Asked whether he thinks there’s a great love story waiting out there for him, Diggs said he’s “not looking for it,” but he’s “ready” and “open” should something come along.
“I’ve found it a couple of times, but I’m open to more,” he told PEOPLE.

When it comes to his next relationship, the star said he wants to embrace new experiences and be “surprised.”
“If I’m doing it right, a lot of it will be new, so I’m ready for that. I don’t want to dictate the menu. I’m going to be surprised,” he explained.
Reflecting on the greatest lesson he’s learned about love, Diggs said it came from his son, rather than from a romantic partner. He shares 17-year-old Walker with ex-wife Idina Menzel.
“When my son was born, I didn’t know that a human being was capable of having that much love for another human being. That was crazy, yeah,” he recalled.
Diggs and Menzel, 55, were married from 2003 to 2013. After their split, the All American actor dated Selling Sunset‘s Amanza Smith and actress Apryl Jones.
Last year, Diggs spoke to PEOPLE about how his approach to dating and relationships has changed as he’s gotten older.
“I have certain boundaries, and my tastes have changed and my patience is low,” he said. “I can barely use my phone as it is! Now I have to use it to communicate with someone of the opposite sex? When do you text back? How long do you wait? Monosyllabic answers. I just don’t know. It’s been an interesting trip.”

Despite this, Diggs insisted at the time that he would “never give up” on finding love.
“I’m just saying it’s not easy. It takes some work and attention,” he explained. “I’m taking it one day at a time because my taste will change hourly. I’ll want to be in a relationship, having another kid, and then the next day I can imagine myself being single until I die. My moods are constantly swinging, so we’ll see how it ends up.”
