“I remember exchanging emails with him a number of years ago when he was beginning day 1 of a new film,” recalled MacFarlane.

“He commented to me that he always walked onto a new set feeling like the biggest novice there,” continued MacFarlane. “My stunned reaction was the same as anyone’s would be. I said, ‘Patrick, if you feel that way, the rest of us are screwed.’ “

According to MacFarlane, Stewart was a great actor who was “also as humble as they come.”

“He was that rare actor who could take any bit of dialogue and elevate it, making a good writer sound great, and a great writer sound masterful,” MacFarlane wrote, adding that Stewart was “one of those icons who we somehow all took for granted would always be with us.”

“We have lost a legendary actor today, and for many of us, a good friend,” said MacFarlane. “He will be deeply missed by the entire planet.”

Stewart played Deputy Director Avery Bullock on American Dad! and served as the narrator for Ted. He also voiced multiple characters on Family Guy, including a fictional version of himself and his Star Trek: The Next Generation character, Captain Jean-Luc Picard.

Rachael MacFarlane, Seth’s sister who has also voiced characters for Family Guy and American Dad!, paid her respects to Stewart.

“He was our Deputy Director for the better part of twenty years,” she wrote on Instagram, referring to Stewart’s American Dad! character. “He was also such a kind, lovely, generous human.”

“My favorite moment with him was when he was expressing such surprise that he had sold out a venue for his book tour…after decades of being beloved, that this would still shock him,” she continued. “Rest in peace, Sir. How fortunate we were to know you.❤️.”

Stewart died after a “brief and poignant journey with Alzheimer’s Disease and Lewy Body Dementia,” his spokesperson said.

In lieu of flowers, his family asks that donations be made to the Johns Hopkins Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center Fund and Alzheimer’s Foundation of America Caregiver Resources in his memory.
