‘Resident Evil’ Nears $400 Million At Box Office As Film Shifts To Digital This Week

Resident Evil, director Zach Cregger’s smash hit adaptation of Capcom’s classic video game-turned-horror movie franchise, makes its digital streaming debut this week as the film inches toward a new box office milestone.

The eighth movie in the live-action film lineup based on the video game, Resident Evil opened in theaters on Sept. 18. Resident Evil was not only a hit out of the gate when it earned $60.1 million from 3,684 North American theaters in its debut weekend Sept. 16-18, it also set a record for the biggest domestic opening in the Resident Evil franchise, which kicked off in 2002. Previously, Resident Evil: Afterlife held the franchise record for the biggest domestic bow when it scored $26.6 million in its first weekend frame in 2010.

As of Sunday, per box office tracker The Numbers, Resident Evil has earned $157.399 million domestically and $242.6 million, to bring its worldwide box office tally to $399.999 million. Variety is reporting the same numbers, but says the film has reached the $400 million mark.

Either way, Resident Evil is the highest-grossing release out of all eight films in the live-action franchise. The second-highest-grossing film worldwide in the franchise is 2016’s Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, which earned $314.1 in 2016 against a $40 million budget before prints and advertising costs. Cregger’s new version of Resident Evil had a $75 million production budget before P&A, according to Variety.

Given that Resident Evil is still playing in 1,943 North American theaters, the film is almost certain to pass Backrooms as the second-highest-grossing horror film globally in 2026. Backrooms earned $400,093,512 at the worldwide box office. Obsession is far and away the highest-grossing film globally in 2026, with a worldwide box office tally of $521,252,715.

Rated R, Resident Evil stars Austin Abrams — who previously appeared in a supporting role in Zach Cregger’s horror sensation Weapons — as Bryan, a medical courier on his way who, instead of ending his shift, accepts a last-minute job to deliver what he believes to be a human organ for a transplant procedure at Racoon City General Hospital.

While taking a treacherous snowy trip to Raccoon City, a woman with a deadly mutative virus steps in the path of his vehicle, which sets off a chaotic night of horror that hinges on the delivery of the sensitive medical package to the hospital.

Directed by Cregger from a screenplay by Cregger and Shay Hatten, Resident Evil also stars Paul Walter Hauser, Kali Reis and Zach Cherry.
