Patrick Stewart’s Final Instagram Post Celebrates Grammy Nomination for Shakespeare Audiobook

Patrick Stewart was still looking ahead to awards season in what appears to have been his final Instagram post before his death.

On October 16, the actor shared that his audiobook of Shakespeare’s sonnets had been submitted for Grammy consideration—a post that took on new significance after news of his death.

“Delighted to learn that @simon.audio have submitted my audiobook of Shakespeare’s sonnets for Grammy consideration. I think The Bard would love a Grammy!” he wrote in the caption.

A statement shared on Stewart’s Instagram on Thursday, October 29, said he died the previous day at his home in Los Angeles, at age 86.

Patrick Stewart’s Grammy history

Stewart has one Grammy win and two nominations, according to the Recording Academy. He won in 1996 for Best Spoken Word Album for Children for his narration of Prokofiev: Peter and the Wolf. His latest audiobook features readings of Shakespeare’s complete sonnets, a fitting project for the classically trained actor. Stewart spent decades performing Shakespeare onstage before becoming known to a wider audience as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek and Professor Charles Xavier in the X-Men films.

The news of his death was shared in an Instagram statement

The statement said Stewart died at his Los Angeles home, with his wife, Sunny, caring for him after his diagnosis with Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia. It described his final hours with family and friends, “surrounded by live music, prayer, tears, laughter.” The statement said he would be remembered for “the dignity, compassion and humanity he brought to every role – in his art and life.”

The tribute also celebrated Stewart’s six-decade career, from the Royal Shakespeare Company to Broadway, film and television. It recalled his performances in Star Trek and the Marvel universe, along with his advocacy for human rights, domestic violence survivors, refugees, veterans’ mental health, and animal welfare. The statement also mentioned his love of motorsports, Huddersfield football, and his foster pit bulls.
