One Of Europe’s Dreamiest Beaches Is A Norwegian Gem With Incredible Landscapes

A slice of paradise sitting north of the Arctic Circle, Norway’s Haukland Beach (known as Hauklandstranda, to locals) may just be one of the most beautiful beaches on the planet. Located in the incredible Lofoten Islands, this stunning beach boasts crystal clear yet chilly water that never warms above 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Hauklandstranda’s powdery white sand, dramatic mountain backdrop, and turquoise water mirror the sky, so it’s no wonder the beach is often voted one of the best in Norway. It brings together a rare combination of coastal serenity and alpine awe, catering to those who seek isolation.

In the summer, the landscape stretches under an endless daylight that’s made possible by the midnight sun. This is arguably the best time of year to visit Norway, but winter brings Arctic magic and the beach becomes a quiet snow-dusted cove illuminated by the Northern Lights. It doesn’t matter if you’re visiting in July or January; standing on Haukland Beach always makes you feel like you’re on another planet. Unlike the bustling shores of famous beaches along the Mediterranean, Hauklandstranda is a truly scenic expanse of raw nature, making it one of Europe’s most idyllic coastal settings.

The easiest way to get to Haukland is to fly into Leknes Airport (LKN), which offers daily flights from Oslo via Bodø. From the airport, it is just a 10-minute drive away. Rental cars and allow you to explore more of the area on your own terms, but they can be expensive — especially in the summer. The most budget-friendly way to get to the beach is via the local bus 765, but it runs very few times per day and operates around locals’ school and work schedules. Traveling around the Lofoten Islands without a car can be very limiting, so picking up a rental is your best bet.

Things to see and do near Haukland Beach

Haukland Beach is a hub of adventures and awaits you with some of Norway’s best hikes. Perhaps surprisingly, the best trails don’t require too much effort but offer high scenic rewards. The trail up to Mannen — the best peak overlooking the beach — takes about 1.5 hours and is easily one of the most popular hikes in the area. It’s a short but relatively technical and steep climb that lets you enjoy exhilarating panoramic views of the sea and surrounding peaks. To extend your journey, there’s a coastal path connecting Haukland and Uttakleiv Beach in just 30 minutes that offers plenty of great photo opportunities along the way. Uttakleiv is a go-to spot for those who love stargazing or chasing auroras, and there’s even a basic campsite where you can set up for the night. However, this is only a comfortable option over the summer, as amenities like bathrooms and water stations close over the winter.

The Lofotr Viking Museum is another nearby attraction you wouldn’t want to miss. This historical site is located in Borg, only about 20 minutes from the beach by car. From interactive exhibits and Viking ships to boathouses and the longest reconstructed longhouse in the world, the museum lets you immerse yourself in ancient Norse culture.

Where to stay and when to visit Hauklandstranda

Great accommodation can be one of the highlights of any vacation. Haukland Beach House is a cozy coastal villa that’s just five minutes away from the beach and can accommodate families or groups of up to six people. If you’re a surfer, however, or someone who wants a boutique cabin vibe, an alternative option is Unstad Arctic Surf, which is a 30-minute drive away. For budget travelers, there are affordable guesthouses and cabins in nearby Leknes as well, which are often more budget-friendly as they’re farther from the beach.

The weather in Lofoten can be unstable, switching between sunshine, rain, wind, and even snow within a single day. So it’s wise to bring layers, sturdy shoes, and a waterproof jacket; likewise, pay attention to the weather forecast beforehand. If you visit over the summer, when most visitors come to Hauklandstranda, you can still avoid the crowds by heading out early in the morning or later in the evening. You could also opt to visit in the shoulder seasons in late spring or early autumn when there are fewer tourists. For more picture-perfect getaways in Norway, add Nordfjord to your itinerary.
