Olivia Rodrigo is dreaming of a romantic Christmas.

On Friday, Nov. 6, the Grammy-winning pop star, 23, released a new original holiday song called “take me home (4 christmas)” alongside a music video co-starring Cynthia Nixon and Saturday Night Live star Ben Marshall.

“I wrote this song with @dan_nigro and Amy Allen last summer and I’m so happy it’s finally close to Christmastime so I can share it with you guys lol,” wrote Rodrigo on Instagram. “Huge shoutout to @benmarshallstyle and @cynthiaenixon who are my favorite canonical red heads and who are absolutely amazing in this vid! Merry Christmas yall!!!”

The upbeat track features lyrics about Rodrigo’s desire to go home with a romantic partner for the holiday season. “I want you to take me home / Show me serious commitment / I want you to take me home / Yeah, come on, take me home for Christmas,” she sings on the chorus.

The music video opens with Rodrigo cleaning up after a house party while Marshall, 31, sleeps on the couch. The pair then shows up to his family home, where Nixon, 60, greets them at the door before serving a major holiday meal.

Throughout the clip, Rodrigo and Marshall are seen performing festive activities like making gingerbread houses, chopping firewood, posing for family photos and playing games together.

At the end, however, the whole family scene is revealed as a mere figment of Rodrigo’s imagination — as she wants Marshall to take her home for Christmas, but he remains asleep on the couch.

Nixon posted on Instagram about making the music video. “I had so much fun playing mom to the hilarious and adorable @benmarshallstyle and imagining what it would be like if the great Olivia Rodrigo showed up on our doorstep for Christmas,” she wrote. “Thank you Olivia for bringing me into your festive wonderland for a day.”

Sonically, “take me home (4 christmas)” is reminiscent of the Waitresses’ 1981 hit “Christmas Wrapping.” In a Facebook post, the band’s lead guitarist and songwriter Christopher Butler revealed he “received a weird email from someone claiming to be Olivia Rodrigo” about two months ago.

“It was filled w/ Waitresses gush, and just had to be fake. Said she’d written a Christmas song, and invited me to hear it. ????? I didn’t know who OR was, so I did a deep dig. Wow… what a career,” began Butler’s post.

“So, I wrote back: Um… Er… Well. If you really are you, thanks for contacting me. And your comments are really sweet, and very flattering,” he continued. “They’re really sweet and flattering… even if you AREN’T you. If you really are Olivia Rodrigo: I like you. I like your music.”

Butler complimented Rodrigo’s musical arrangements and songwriting abilities before saying he’d “be honoured to hear your Christmas song.”

He explained that Rodrigo invited him and his fiancée Beth Becker to attend her Daisy Chain Fields festival in August, but they couldn’t attend. However, they were able to go see her Unraveled Tour stop in Columbus, Ohio, last month and meet after the show.

In a comment on his post, Butler referred to Rodrigo’s new holiday song as a “fantasticbangersmash” and said, “I wish her monster success with it.”
