It seemed like just a bit… or was it?
Rapper-turned-MAGA-uber-cheerleader Nicki Minaj sat down for a staged job interview with White House communications director Steven Cheung in a wacky video posted on Sunday, with Minaj heaping praise on President Donald Trump in her (seemingly in jest?) bid to become the next White House press secretary, after Katie Zacharia’s five day stint ended earlier this month.
And the name of the game for Zacharia’s replacement appears to be how many Trump compliments you can wedge into each answer, based on Minaj’s “interview.”
While sitting across from her at a table aboard Air Force One, Cheung threw three questions at the “Anaconda” performer, beginning with a question on the economy. Minaj started off strong with a healthy pro-Trump answer.
“Well, it’s exploding because we have a president who understands economics,” Minaj said. “I’ve said before the president is naturally a businessman, he’s worked his way out of, you know, not having a dollar left in the bank. So if he can do that with himself and his own finances, surely he knows what to do with the country.”
With a picture of American troops raising the flag at Iowa Jima to her left, she added Trump was “tough” and not going to get pushed around by foreign nations.
“We’re not going to be paying to kiss their a**,” as she put it.
Cheung seemed to dig her answer as he looked on. He moved onto his next question, mentioning how Trump is criss-crossing the country to hold rallies before the 2026 midterms.
He then chucked a bit of a leading question at her, asking, “Is there anyone who works harder than President Trump on the campaign trail?”
Minaj deftly laid it on thick:
Absolutely not. You have a man who’s won three elections, you know, legacy media continues to attack him left and right, and what does he do? He wakes up at 4:00 in the morning, [and] he outworks people that are half his age.
And what does that say about his character? He knows that he would be fine, he could kick his feet up and just chill out for the rest of his presidency. But no, he’s paying it forward, he’s thinking about the other Republicans that have to win during these elections, and so that tells me he’s a great guy.
Meanwhile, a handful of people walked by in the background, seeming a bit thrown off by the impromptu interview. Still, Cheung moved on to the third and final question.
“What’s your message to Americans about these fake news polls?” he asked.
“Let’s ask Hillary Clinton how fake the fake polls are. We don’t pay those polls any mind,” Minaj said. “Obviously they are to deter our voters from going out and casting their vote… we need not let anything stand in our way from taking it all the way.”
Cheung by this point appeared totally sold on Minaj being the new press secretary. He started to announce, “Ladies and gentleman,” but there was one problem: his 133-second clip abruptly ended.
He picked it back up in the caption to his video by posting, “Ladies and gentlemen, I think we may have found the new White House Press Secretary! @NickiMinaj.”
