Rockers My Chemical Romance are in legal trouble with the Dallas Cowboys following their show at the Hollywood Bowl
The “Welcome to the Black Parade” band recently performed in LA, with a group of backing dancers dressed as Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders carrying prop guns.
Pro Silver Star, the company behind the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders brand, filed a motion for a temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction against the rock band in Dallas County District Court on Friday, Oct. 23, per NBC News, Rolling Stone and TMZ.
Video footage shared by fans of the band on social media shows the dancers holding fake guns while protecting the band from military forces. The group’s performance of “Teenagers” included the dancers in DCC outfits who then, according to the legal documents, “armed themselves with rifles in a staged firefight, only to be depicted being shot.
Pro Silver Star’s attorney, Alex Spiro, argued that “audience members and online commentators understandably believed that the performers were the real Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders,” adding that this confusion was echoed in online feedback.
The attorney added that they had no issue with the band, just with them using the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders in their live performances. According to Rolling Stone, Pro Silver Star at first requested that the band “stop the infringing use of the DCC Uniform,” but they refused.
“Silver Star does not ask Defendants to change their setlist, narrative, politics, choreography or even their decision to put gun-toting performers on stage. Silver Star asks only that those performers not wear the DCC uniform while doing it,” Spiro wrote in the motion, according to People.
“Silver Star is not litigious, and it takes no issue with MCR’s music, its artistic ambitions, or any message Defendants seek to convey. Silver Star does not ask Defendants to change their setlist, narrative, politics, choreography, or even their decision to put gun-toting performers on stage. Silver Star asks only that those performers not wear the DCC Uniform while doing it. The universe of alternative costume designs is effectively unlimited,” the statement continued.
The band continued to use the dancers and costumes after Pro Silver Star filed the legal action. The band is currently touring in celebration of the 20th anniversary of its third studio album, The Black Parade.
