Plenty of actors have looked cool behind the wheel on the big screen. That doesn’t always mean they’re gearheads in real life.
Liam Neeson, who plays a decorated combat veteran racing across the country in a Ford Shelby Super Snake in the new action thriller The Mongoose, admitted he has zero interest in cars, per People on Tuesday, October 27.
“I know nothing about cars. I have no interest in cars. I drive a black one in real life,” Neeson, 74, said.
“When I’m in my car and I’m on a highway, maximum speed, I get up to maybe 58 miles an hour,” the Schindler’s List actor admitted.

Stunt drivers handled most of the high-speed action. Neeson’s longtime stunt double, Mark Vanselow, who makes his feature directorial debut with the film, explained that in some scenes, Neeson acted inside a moving car while a stunt driver controlled it from the roof.
“Imagine driving down a freeway, bobbing and weaving in and out of cars where you have no control over the car and you’re inside. That’s what Liam has to do a lot of the time while he’s acting, while there’s a camera in his face,” Vanselow said, per the report.
He said, “That’s frightening because you think, ‘Oh, I hope the car stops here.’ It does ultimately, but you never really know till it stops.”
Neeson admitted filming those sequences wasn’t easy for him. “And there were some dramatic scenes, dramatic for me too, and nerve-wracking for me too, even though I knew the stunt driver was superb. As I say, I’m not a car person. I’m not comfortable,” he said, per People.
“I did some myself, but it was kind of a cheat. Certainly not at speed,” Neeson explained.

The Taken star said he had full confidence in his longtime collaborator. “Mark and I, this is our 30th project together. He’s done my fight choreography in many films, stand-in, stunt double stuff. I totally trusted Mark with all these driving sequences. It wasn’t him; we had these wonderful stunt drivers,” Neeson said, the outlet reported.
Neeson likely won’t have to worry about getting caught by Los Angeles’ new speed cameras. As First for Autos previously reported, the city began activating cameras on October 26 that will eventually issue fines of $50 to $500 to drivers caught traveling at least 11 mph over the posted speed limit, following an initial 60-day warning period, according to the Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT).
