It’s official.

Unless someone pulls a fast one, the ski season in California/Nevada (and the broader West Coast) will kick off on November 6, 2026, at Mt. Rose-Ski Tahoe, the high-elevation resort near Lake Tahoe.

The upcoming opening date, which Mt. Rose had previously had its eyes on, was locked in by early-season snow and cold temperatures, allowing snowmaking operations to get underway.

The party starts at 9 a.m. with Mt. Rose’s Lakeview Express lift. Open trails will include Kit Carson Traverse, Kit Carson Bowl, Ponderosa, and potentially more runs as snowmaking continues this week. Relatively brisk temperatures dipping below freezing overnight are expected at Mt. Rose all week, per the National Weather Service.

Recent views from the resort show solid snow coverage and even some cheeky ski tracks.

Beginner terrain will be available on opening day, but it will be limited to the Show-Off area near the main lodge. Mt. Rose expects that the Magic Conveyor lift will be open to service this terrain.

“We’re excited to get winter started, and to again offer skiers and snowboarders another six-month season. Mt Rose Ski Tahoe can boast one of the longest ski seasons in Tahoe with operations from early November until almost May,” said Mike Pierce, the resort’s marketing director, in a news release.

Advanced tickets for the opener are available online, and Mt. Rose is still selling season passes. Snow tubing isn’t open yet and is projected to open on Thanksgiving Day.

The announcement trails a storm that brought widespread snow to many of California’s ski resorts over the weekend—both around Lake Tahoe and further south at Mammoth Mountain, where as much as 15 inches fell.

In California, Mammoth Mountain appears the likeliest to open next with a planned November 13 kick-off date.

For Mt. Rose, the Friday opening is, in a way, a welcome return to business as usual. The resort has a reputation for early openings but, like other mountains during the challenging 2025-26 season, opened later than usual last winter on November 21.

Beyond Mt. Rose and Mammoth, the majority of California’s ski resorts are set to open in late November or early December.
