Italy Shuts Down a Major Tourist Airport for an Entire Month

Naples is an important arrival point for Americans exploring southern Italy.

The city attracts visitors with its historic center, world-famous pizza and access to archaeological sites such as Pompeii and Herculaneum. It also serves as a starting point for journeys to Capri and the Amalfi Coast.

However, visitors heading to the region face an additional transport complication this month.

Flights that use Naples International Airport will have to operate under a different arrangement.

Airport operator GESAC confirmed the month-long closure on October 29, describing the work as part of a €30 million investment in runway rehabilitation and airport infrastructure.

The airport handled 13,271,522 passengers and 89,275 aircraft movements in 2025, making the suspension a significant disruption for the Campania region.

According to GESAC, some flights have been temporarily transferred to Salerno Costa d’Amalfi and Cilento Airport, which is handling connections to 15 domestic and international destinations.

The domestic connections include:

  • Milan Malpensa with easyJet.

  • Milan Linate with Aeroitalia and ITA Airways.

  • Genoa, Turin and Trieste with Aeroitalia.

International connections include Amsterdam (Transavia), Barcelona (Vueling), Casablanca (Air Arabia Maroc), Dubai (flydubai), Düsseldorf and Stuttgart (Eurowings), Madrid (Iberia), Paris (Transavia France) and Sharm el-Sheikh (Air Cairo and Neos).

Both Salerno Airport terminals are operating during the closure. However, passengers should check their airline’s instructions because the two terminals are approximately 1,300 meters apart.

The Commercial Aviation Terminal handles domestic services and several international routes. The General Aviation Terminal serves Casablanca, Dubai, Sharm el-Sheikh and Madrid. A free shuttle connects the terminals from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m., approximately every 20 minutes.

Busitalia Campania Launches €12 Piazza Garibaldi Shuttle Buses

The airport operator and Busitalia Campania have introduced additional ground transportation for passengers affected by the closure.

A special bus service connects Naples Piazza Garibaldi with Salerno Airport, providing eight departures in each direction every day.

Services are scheduled around flight times, and tickets cost €12 each way. Passengers can purchase them on board using electronic payment.

Other arrangements include:

  • More frequent buses between Salerno Airport and Salerno railway station.

  • Continued connections to Potenza, Eboli, Battipaglia and the Amalfi Coast.

  • Shared taxis with fixed fares between Salerno Airport and the main railway stations in Naples and Salerno.

Passengers should also check which Salerno terminal their flight uses before arranging onward transportation.

Eurocontrol Logs Potential Nov. 22 Return Amid EU Flight Rules

Travelers booked to fly into or out of Naples during November should check their airline’s latest communication. This applies even when the flight number and destination have not changed.

Passengers whose flights have been canceled should also review their options under European air passenger rules. The European Commission’s guidance provides for a choice between reimbursement and rerouting, while compensation eligibility depends on notification timing and the circumstances behind the cancellation.

GESAC currently advertises the closure through November 30. However, Eurocontrol’s operational-event listing identifies November 22 as the end of the airport’s first recorded closure period.
