I’m a Strength Coach—This is Hands Down the Best Piece of Workout Equipment Men Over 50 Should Own

Kettlebell training has been a staple in American gyms since it was popularized in the late ’90s by former Soviet Special Forces instructor Pavel Tsatsouline. Even decades later, guys everywhere still rely on the almighty kettlebell, and for good reason. Few workout tools deliver a more efficient, full-body workout in such a compact, portable vessel.

“One kettlebell can replace an entire rack of equipment because it allows for strength work, conditioning, and mobility training in a single session,” says Kris Herbert, strength coach and founder of The Gym Venice. “Unlike barbells, they don’t require heavy loading to be effective, and compared to dumbbells, the offset weight challenges core stability in a way that’s both joint-friendly and functional.”

Just like dumbbells, kettlebells come in a range of different weight increments. But most people probably don’t need an entire collection, which is good news, because kettlebells can get pricey. For those who want more flexibility without buying multiple sets, adjustable kettlebells are a solid middle ground.

In Herbert’s own training, however, kettlebells aren’t a full replacement for traditional strength training. Instead, he uses them as a supplement to improve movement quality, which is the foundation of real-world strength.

“Kettlebells are best used as a tool to support specific movement patterns that allow the body to function properly,” he explains. “When those patterns are strong—hinging, bracing, rotating, carrying—you earn the right to perform compound strength movements safely and effectively. That’s always the goal of efficient training, especially as we age.”

Nevertheless, for men over 50 training at home, kettlebells can offer a safe and smart way to stay strong without overcomplicating things.
