I’m a Family Travel Advisor, and These Are My Top 3 Tips for Traveling with Teens

I get it: traveling with teens can be overwhelming. For parents, family trips can feel high-stakes. All parents want to create lasting memories, but it can be tricky to chase those golden moments of connection amidst mood swings and screen time battles. As a professional travel advisor for over 20 years and a mom to a 15-year-old, I’ve witnessed every side of the struggle, but I also know just how magical a well-planned trip can be. Here are some of my best practical tips for traveling with teenagers—tried, tested, and teenager-approved.

Choose the Right Property

There are so many hidden gems around the world that offer a blend of history, culture, and freedom. For teens, it’s important that they can roam safely, explore on their own, and feel a sense of independence, all while parents relax knowing they’re in a secure environment.

When choosing a destination, consider mountain or beach properties that offer outdoor activity options like biking, tennis, and paddleboarding. These features encourage teens to get outside, be active, and get off their screens, while also giving them that valuable freedom to explore. The right stay can be the perfect base for both family bonding and individual discovery—a win-win for everyone.

Plus, although it may sound simple, remember to ask your teens about their preferences. My son once told me he prefers a resort where he “doesn’t walk out into a hallway.” That stuck with me; it’s exactly the kind of small detail that might go unnoticed by some, but can make a trip significantly more enjoyable for teens. The result could be a beachside villa, or a private cabin on a mountain.

Give Them Space to Breathe

Teens need downtime just as much as they need adventure. We parents may be inclined to pack the itinerary full of potential memorable moments, but many teens thrive when they have space to relax, sleep in, and simply be. One of the best ways to achieve this balance? Villas.

Villas allow families to stay together under one roof, but with enough room to spread out. Teens can lounge around and retreat for some private, quiet time without feeling trapped in a hotel room. Plus, they offer flexibility in pace and meals, which can help avoid “hangry” moods and accommodate differing sleep schedules.

For these reasons and more, I regularly arrange villas for clients all over the world, from day-trip-friendly “home bases” in Tuscany, to luxury beachfront escapes with easy access to water sports. Whether you’re interested in vineyard tours or a paddleboard excursion at sunrise, a well-located villa is ideal for striking the perfect balance between togetherness and independence.

Consider a Cruise

Cruising is a fantastic way to explore multiple countries and destinations—all without the hassle of unpacking more than once. For families traveling with teens, this can be a game changer.

There’s a cruise out there for everyone, from tropical getaways in the Caribbean to multi-country European adventures. With family friendly lines like Hurtigruten, you can even take educational expeditions to places like the Galápagos Islands or Norway. Onboard, there’s usually a wide range of teen-friendly activities, entertainment, and spaces just for them.

Whether your teen wants to chill by the pool, join a dance party, or kayak through a glacier bay, cruises offer a safe and exciting environment where everyone can enjoy the journey in their own way.
