I attempted to run 240 miles in 100 hours (Moab 240)

I recently attempted something that feels completely ridiculous to say out loud: running a 240 mile long race. The Moab 240 might be one of the most insane races in the entire world. And even though my experience went almost nothing like I thought it would, I can’t wait to share it with you.

While you read, I hope you’ll take a second to celebrate the fact that your feet are dry and comfortable. That’s a feeling I’ll never take for granted ever again.

Now let’s dive into what the Moab 240 race actually is:

What is the Moab 240?

The Moab 240 is a 240-mile ultra endurance race that happens every year in Utah’s Moab National Park. The route is a single, giant loop that begins and ends in Moab. Runners have to run through hot, dry deserts to the top of mountains that reach over 10,000 feet.

Usually, extreme desert heat is the worry in this race, but 2025 was completely different. Moab got more rain this year than it has gotten in the last 150 years, which created rivers on the course, extremely cold nights, and enduring wet feet and clothing for the majority of the race.

The cutoff of the race is 117 hours (just under 5 days), but only about 60% of runners actually complete the whole thing. Those who do manage to get to the end usually finish in under 100 hours.

How did I hear about this race?

In the past couple of years, I’ve done a couple of ultramarathons, but the Moab 240 felt like a full-circle moment because it was the first ultramarathon I’d ever heard of.

In 2017, I stumbled upon a podcast episode where Courtney Dauwalter, one of the world’s best ultramarathoners, talked about her Moab 240 experience (she ran it in under 50 hours!!). Later, I read David Goggins’ book about the experience and at the time, running the Moab 240 seemed like the craziest thing in the entire world. But now, here I am, talking about how I’m one of those crazy people attempting to run 240 miles in one continuous race.

Introducing my Support Crew

For me, ultrarunning has totally been a team sport, where I have had an amazing crew of family and friends helping me in every race and this race’s crew was the most special yet. I was very grateful when my entire family decided to come out to Moab to support me and even more grateful when my dad, brother, sister, and brother-in-law all signed up to pace me throughout this monstrous race. All signing up to run further than they ever have before! My dad trained for weeks to join me on a 27 mile section and my brother agreed to a stretch that might take 24 hours to run.

Kara and my sister-in-law, Sarah, handled all of the aid station logistics, and Kara met me at every crewed aid station, making sure I had everything I needed like food and dry clothing. My mom, nieces and nephews, and the Noft family were also there supporting me and cheering me on.

Seriously, I couldn’t have done it if I didn’t have this awesome support crew behind me and doing it all together made this race so much more special.

How hard is the Moab 240?

The Moab 240 is hard in a thousand ways that you can’t imagine till you’re on the course. Let’s run through some of them:

  • Long chunks of time in between aid stations, where you might run for 30 hours before seeing your crew again.

  • Dirt trails that turn into rivers and miles long mud pits thanks to the rain.

  • Running on almost no sleep (maybe 7 hours in 4 days).

  • Lack of cell service that makes it difficult for the crew to know when to meet you at the aid stations.

  • The impossibly steep and rocky climbs through the mountains.

  • The classic ultra marathon induced bowel issues…. enough said.

  • Carrying up to 15 pounds of food, clothing, and water on your back.

  • Running (or more accurately, limping) through freezing cold rain and sleet all night long.

As low as the lows are, the race promises some highs too. Having pacers jump in for stretches gives friendly company that breaks up the long, monotonous miles. When the weather is not boiling hot or super rainy, there is time to appreciate how absolutely incredible Moab’s scenery is – just miles and miles of the coolest red rock formations you’ll ever see. The excitement of friends and volunteers cheering you on at the aid stations will give you the boost needed to keep going.

And of course, the feeling you get when you finally, finally cross the finish line is promised to be one of the best you’ll ever feel.

Did I get to experience that feeling for myself? Or did I become one of the 40% who didn’t finish the Moab 240?

You’ll have to watch our Moab 240 video down below to find out!
