A health and leisure centre has taken the unusual step of opening a specialist health and rehabilitation suite to support older adults and individuals living with long‑term health conditions.

The new facility at Downs Leisure Centre in Seaford in East Sussex is supported by a physiotherapist, neuro-physiotherapist and other health practitioners.

Users can access advanced neuro‑rehabilitation technology, including augmented reality glasses that support mobility, cognitive engagement and rehabilitation.

Dominic Crowhurst, physiotherapist and head of Wave Active Health described the facility as a “transformative step forward”.

A low‑impact approach is ideal for people recovering from injury, illness or surgery, the health centre says [Mark Norman/BBC]

“By combining specialist clinical expertise with innovative neuro‑rehabilitation technology, we can offer personalised, engaging and effective rehabilitation in a welcoming community setting,” Crowhurst said.

Users can access advanced neuro‑rehabilitation technology, including large interactive touchscreen tables offering a range of therapeutic applications, and Strolll augmented reality glasses which have been made available for the first time in the UK outside a clinical setting.

The team at Wave says a low‑impact approach is ideal for people recovering from injury, illness or surgery or returning to activity after a period of inactivity.

Duncan Kerr, CEO of Wave Active, said they had helped “create a dedicated space that will support active ageing, rehabilitation and those living with long‑term health conditions”.
