SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Travelers can be thankful the Government shutdown is over as the Thanksgiving holiday approaches. AAA projects shy of 82 million people will travel at least 50 miles from home over the next week and a half.
Baggage claim at the Sioux Falls Airport on Thursday was busy and will only get busier in the coming days.

Jeff Merry of Garretson has just gotten back from a trip. He travels just about every week and is a seasoned traveler.
“The No. 1 thing is to get to the airport early enough so you are not rushing. And depending on if you have TSA Pre or not, that makes a difference too, if you want to get here a little bit earlier, if you get TSA Pre, which I suggest getting, as it gets you through the lines a lot quicker,” said Merry.
During busy traveling times, we are likely to experience delays or cancellations. Merry has some sage advice.
“I’ve had so many delays over the years, I don’t really worry about it anymore,” said Merry.
Merry suggests having your airline’s customer service phone number written down or the app downloaded on your phone so you can make arrangements.
Experienced travelers will also tell you that the type of luggage you use can have a big impact on your traveling.
Victoria Wilson flew in from Richmond, Virginia. She’s a big fan of what she calls wheelies.
“Lightweight, under 5 pounds, has all the bells and whistles that you might like, holds your coffee cup; they are pretty fancy these days,” Wilson said.
Her No. 1 tip is always to arrive early and be kind to those around you.
“Especially when you are traveling, no one wants the angry person in the room because you are all doing the same thing essentially,” said Wilson.
So, along with your clothes and other items, it never hurts to pack a little patience.
Other tips from our experienced travelers include bringing a jacket or sweater, as planes can get cool. It can also be useful to pack along snacks in case you have delays
