Not only is the small town a self-appointed “antique town” (you’ll see road signs professing the designation along the way in), with dozens of popular spots to peruse, but it’s also home to a particularly well-preserved historic district that makes you feel like you’re walking with one foot in the past. Historical markers, monuments and 19th- and 20th-century buildings are everywhere. Award-winning wineries also attract visitors year-round. Singing Waters Vineyard, located in Comfort, recently made history, winning the San Francisco Chronicle’s award for the best cabernet sauvignon of 2025.

Comfort was founded by German immigrants in the 1850s. They were known as “Freethinkers,” a group of intellectuals who supported freedom of speech, secular education and the abolition of slavery. One major landmark that the town is known for is the Treue Der Union Monument, which honors the lives of 36 German men and boys who opposed the Confederates during the Civil War. The men attempted to flee to Mexico but were found and executed.

Comfort is located off of Interstate 10, less than an hour from San Antonio. Texas 27 and U.S. 87 also run through the town, making it easy to access from Boerne, Center Point, Fredericksburg and Kerrville.
