Rimowa has unveiled a new iteration of its Cabin Luggage Harness concept, which is likely to catch the eye of frequent travelers who favor hard-shell carry-ons.
The latest version, dubbed the Cabin Luggage Harness Backpack, builds on the original design with a key upgrade: hidden shoulder straps that transform the accessory into a standalone backpack.

The Cabin Luggage Harness Backpack’s core concept remains unchanged from the original: it’s a small, secondary bag that doubles as an organizational system, strapping onto Rimowa’s famed cabin carry-on suitcase so that it’s easy to carry and still keep gear accessible.
Where the new version distinguishes itself is in its versatility. Rimowa has added hidden shoulder straps and cleverly designed side panels that now allow the harness to function as a thin laptop-sized backpack when detached from your suitcase.
The system also functions as a briefcase when the two sections are zipped together, providing genuine flexibility in navigating airports and city streets.

The backpack carries a dedicated laptop compartment and multiple organizational pockets, making it a practical standalone option for day trips or when you need to step away from your rolling luggage. T
The design works with Rimowa’s Original, Classic, Essential, Essential Lite, and Hybrid cabin collections, attaching via adjustable straps that secure to the telescoping handle. And depending on the dimensions of the suitcase, there’s no reason why it wouldn’t work with other brands too.

In fairness, Rimowa can’t take full credit for inventing this bag design. The Brookstone Carry-On Harness offers the same basic attach-to-your-suitcase-and-convert-to-backpack functionality, though with materials and construction quality that reflect its $20 budget price point.
The price roadblock

At $600, the Cabin Luggage Harness Backpack costs $50 more than the already wildly expensive original harness.
That’s frankly an absurd price point. You can choose from multiple options on our best travel backpack list, or opt for a few well-regarded luxury briefcases.
The pricing underscores a broader issue with Rimowa’s approach: while the concept is undeniably clever, the execution remains exclusive. For most travelers operating on realistic budgets, the math doesn’t work, especially for a bag made of recycled nylon and nylon webbing.
What makes the concept frustrating is that it’s a genuinely bright idea – the kind of clever design thinking that could appeal to a much wider audience if other brands in the mid-tier price range would take notice and develop their own interpretations.
Until then, the Cabin Luggage Harness Backpack remains an interesting proof of concept that’ll likely only appeal to committed Rimowa loyalists or travelers not bothered by budgetary constraints and interested in an ultra-convenient setup.
