While there are many cities within Sonoma Valley (ranging from the upscale vibe of Healdsburg to the rustic charm of Santa Rosa), for my recent trip, I decided to opt for the city of Sonoma as my home away from home, as it’s a convenient locale for nearby wine tastings and notable restaurants and has a delightful historic town square that is enjoyable to explore by foot.
That said, there are several luxury hotels in Sonoma, but for this particular trip, I chose to book a stay at the renowned Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa.
Over the years, I’ve read about the property in publications such as Condé Nast Traveler and Travel & Leisure, ranking it as one of the top historic hotels in Northern California. Not to mention – it’s highly reputed for its legendary (and palatial) spa, which is one of the primary reasons I was compelled to visit.

What makes the property uniquely different than other luxury hotels across the country is that it features multiple natural hot springs and therapy pools within its massive 40,000-square-foot deluxe spa. After researching a variety of wineries (recommended by Wine Enthusiast and Food & Wine magazines), I decided to schedule a wine tasting at the top-rated Chateau St. Jean Winery, as it’s renowned as one of the most iconic wineries in Sonoma County, as it stands as a testament to the region’s commitment to producing exceptional wines.
The sprawling estate, reminiscent of a French chateau, offers a sensory exploration of varietals that have garnered international acclaim. They have even been honored with the prestigious “Wine of the Year” award from Wine Spectator Magazine for their 1996 Cinq Cepages Cabernet Sauvignon.
From crisp Chardonnays to robust Cabernet Sauvignons, each sip tells a story of the terroir and craftsmanship. This place is a hotspot for dinner, especially on bustling weekends. As you step into the industrial-style restaurant, you’re greeted by a warm and vibrant ambiance. Boasting cozy contemporary décor and modern artwork that’s inspired by Jack London, you’ll feel like you’re transported to a world of culinary innovation that pays homage to the history and character of the land.
From delectable small bites to sumptuous entrées, each dish is a celebration of flavors that dance on your taste buds. Pair your meal with selections from the extensive wine list, and let the evening unfold in an atmosphere of refined indulgence. If you’re looking for an “it place” that even the most notable Sonoma Valley winemakers dine at, this is it. Not to mention – if you’re passionate about truffles, you’ll be excited to try their Truffleato, which is their original interpretation of a savory-meet-semi-sweet truffle gelato.
