Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy is known mainly for pizza reviews, gambling, and sports takes. But lately, he’s waded into politics and has made it abundantly clear how he feels about some of the most prominent Democrats in the country.
In recent months, Portnoy has gone after Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed, New York City’s Mayor Zohran Mamdani, and Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, as he has made a point of targeting Democratic Senator-elect Abdul El-Sayed, who won his election on Tuesday.
In the weeks leading up to Tuesday, El-Sayed in particular was a point of emphasis for Portnoy. He jokingly called the future Senator a “terrorist” for his Michigan takes before saying that El-Sayed makes him “puke,” and that he wouldn’t like his nieces going to Michigan, where both Portnoy and El-Sayed graduated from, if El-Sayed won his election.
“I do not like Sayed. I’ve said that a million times,” Portnoy told Sage Steele. “I hate how if you question things he does, says, his family ties, it’s like, oh, you’re racist, you’re like Islamophobic or whatever. It’s like, that’s crazy. He kicked it off by campaigning with Hasan Piker, who, you know, said, ‘America deserved 9/11, America’s worse than Al-Qaeda.’ He worships China and Russia, which naturally you’re allowed to ask, why are you campaigning with a guy who hates America?”
He added, “I fundamentally think if you hate this country and he hates it, you shouldn’t be in office.”
Unfortunately for Portnoy, El-Sayed won on Tuesday, defeating Republican candidate Mike Rogers and becoming the first Muslim member of the United States Senate. After the results rode in, one journalist leapt at the opportunity to take a shot at Portnoy.
“Dave Portnoy is a huge loser tonight, and it’s a great thing. Barstool is a scourge on society and so uncool now—their fan base is 38 year old dudes who live in staid condos & bet on their phones. They wear sweatpants all day & order DoorDash for most meals. Sad group overall,” Queerty’s Alex Reimer, who also contributes to Awful Announcing, posted on X.
Portnoy has yet to publicly address Tuesday’s results, but it’s safe to say he isn’t happy at all about how things turned out. Over the summer, he floated the idea of running against Mamdani for Mayor of New York City. Perhaps Tuesday will make him consider a Senate run in Michigan.
