Al Roker is starting the new year strong! The Chief Motivation Officer for Start TODAY jumped right back into his workout routine post-holidays.
Al is an avid walker, sharing his streaks and daily step counts on social media. But that doesn’t mean he shies away from strength training. To the contrary, he makes sure to incorporate full-body strength exercises, using both dumbbells, resistance bands and body weight, a few times a week.
On Jan. 2, he documented his first workout of the year, posting an Instagram video at the gym. “The first #workout of 2026! C’mon @starttoday_ today family. Let’s start the year off strong. Check out the #januarychallenge#somethingisbetterthannothing,” he wrote, encouraging followers to join Start TODAY’s 31-Day Workout Challenge.
Two days later, Al was out walking in the cold winter weather, which he previously told TODAY he loves to do. “Unless you take care of yourself, you can’t take care of anyone in your family. Remember, something is better than nothing!” he said in the video while briskly walking.
Al Roker’s Strength Training Workout
When it comes to strength training, Al is focused on functional exercises that improve mobility, build strength, and improve his balance and core stability — all important factors for healthy aging.
On Jan. 6, Al shared a video on Instagram of the strength routine that he does in the morning before heading to work at the TODAY show. The well-rounded routine includes both upper- and lower-body exercises, mobility and balance training.
These are the foundational exercises that Al incorporates into his strength training routine:
