“Yo. Mt. Rose is opening on Friday, are you going?”

Sitting at my parents’ house in southeastern Pennsylvania, I received the text above from a friend. It was one of the most exciting texts I’ve received in a long time.

It was Halloween, and while skiing is always on my mind, I assumed I would have to wait three, maybe even four weeks before making my first turns of the season. But thanks to the valiant efforts of Mt. Rose-Ski Tahoe’s snowmaking team and groomers, I wouldn’t have to wait more than a few days. I panicked with excitement.

Back from my trip out East, I rolled into Mt. Rose’s lot in the early morning hours of Friday, November 6, 2026, and a familiar sight greeted me. There she was. Mt. Rose. Caked in a thin layer of snow, the ski area wasn’t sporting its full winter coat, but Kit Carson Bowl, Mt. Rose’s typical early-season haunt, looked great.

I couldn’t see any exposed surfaces from the base, always a good sign for skiing in early November. I smiled and turned down the Turnstile song blasting from my car’s stereo. I didn’t need any more pre-ski hype. It was go-time.

You can’t ski Mt. Rose-Ski Tahoe unless you own a pair of skis from Reno-based Moment Skis. Just kidding, but my pair of Moment Countache 98s ended up being the perfect choice for the firm and fast conditions.

Mt. Rose has started a tradition of handing out fluorescent tank tops with “Opening Day (insert season here)” in recent years. They’re first-come, first-served, and I’ve managed to score one in 2023, 2024, and again this year.

This year’s tank was neon green and sported a catchy tagline: “Super El Niño? Super Elevation. Opening Day 26/27.”

The super El Niño we’ve all been hearing about hasn’t delivered copious amounts of snow to Mt. Rose yet, but it undoubtedly brought a hopeful, optimistic outlook on the season. You could practically see it on every skier’s face.

Last year was challenging, and while that could spoil opening day this year, the Mt. Rose faithful must have missed the memo. Smiles were common, hugs were abundant, and friends reconnecting seemed to be happening all around me. It was joyous. I felt a weight fall off my shoulders that I didn’t know I was carrying.

The ski season was finally here.

Kit Carson Bowl was a bit icy on the first lap of the day, but the sun and above-freezing temps eventually worked their magic. I found myself enjoying each subsequent lap more than the last.

I’ve heard many skiers complain about opening days in the past. They say cliché things like, “Why would I ski only one trail?” and “I’ll wait for it to actually snow. You’re crazy for thinking manmade snow is fun.”

I simply can’t relate to these people, and after taking 10 laps down Kit Carson Bowl, I feel even more strongly that I’m not the crazy one. Was the surface a bit slick? Sure, but skiing isn’t about perfect conditions.

Skiing is about sliding downhill with friends, and I managed to do that in spades at Mt. Rose’s opening day. I couldn’t ask for anything more.

Mt. Rose will continue its snowmaking efforts when Mother Nature allows, and it seemed like a few trails adjacent to Kit Carson Bowl were close to being ready to open. Keep an eye on Mt. Rose’s daily conditions reports for additional trail openings.

And, if you’re a skier who “only skis on powder days” (whatever that means), an atmospheric river is brewing in the Pacific Ocean that could dump more than a foot of snow on Mt. Rose late next week.

Happy ski season, friends. It’s good to be back. Ski ya out there.
