Dane Cook’s half-brother stole approximately $12 million from him while managing his finances.
Cook has opened up about the family betrayal, its impact on his career, and whether he can forgive his brother.
The comedian is looking toward a comeback with a new documentary, live shows, and a planned 2027 tour.
At the height of his fame, Dane Cook was selling out arenas, topping comedy charts, and becoming one of the biggest stand-up stars in America. But behind the scenes, the comedian was being betrayed by the person he trusted most: his older half-brother and business manager, Darryl McCauley.
The documentary Funny Money: The Dane Cook Story, directed by Brett Harvey and now streaming on Netflix, unpacks the extraordinary story of how McCauley embezzled at least $12 million from Cook, hiding stacks of cash in everything from spaghetti sauce jars to boxes of Bagel Bites. When Cook finally discovered the theft in 2008, his brother had already made off with millions and soon went on the run.
McCauley was eventually arrested and sentenced to prison, but the financial damage was only part of the betrayal. Cook has spent years reckoning with the loss of his relationship with his brother, his money, and the damage to his career and reputation. Now, nearly two decades later, he’s telling the story in his own words and hoping to reclaim the narrative. Here’s what happened.

Cook trusted McCauley to manage his finances, giving him access to his bank accounts and business affairs. But McCauley began transferring money into accounts of his own, forging Cook’s signature and using the comedian’s funds to pay for personal expenses. A forensic audit eventually revealed that he had stolen approximately $12 million.
The theft also left Cook with a tax bill of around $6 million, including interest, after McCauley failed to pay taxes on Cook’s earnings. When the scheme came to light, investigators discovered cash hidden in places including sauce jars, a potted plant, and a wall safe, according to an interview Cook gave to Entertainment Weekly.

McCauley was arrested in 2008 and pleaded guilty to embezzlement, larceny, and forgery in 2010. He was sentenced to five to six years in prison. His then-wife, Erika McCauley, was also implicated in the scheme and pleaded guilty, receiving a sentence of two years and three months to three years.
McCauley has since been released. According to Rolling Stone, his LinkedIn profile lists various jobs after prison, including a five-year stint as a FedEx driver. The brothers have not reconciled.
Did Dane Cook ever get his money back?
Cook says he never recovered the millions his brother stole. He was able to rebuild his finances through a self-funded arena tour, using the roughly $300,000 he had left in stocks to get back on his feet.
The financial loss was only part of the damage. Cook told Rolling Stone that “the humiliation was way more damaging than the theft.” McCauley was still making small restitution payments years after his conviction. By 2024, he had paid back just $3,900, leaving more than $12 million outstanding.

Cook has spoken openly about the emotional fallout, describing the theft as a particularly painful betrayal because of the trust he had placed in his brother. “I did a good thing for my brother, and he manipulated this based on the best betrayal tool of all: love,” he told EW.
He has also said that he misses his brother and the experiences they shared. In his interview with Rolling Stone, Cook called the documentary “some version of a love letter to my brother.” He has not ruled out reconciliation, although he still wants answers about the betrayal.
Why did Dane Cook’s career slow down?
Cook’s career peaked in the mid-2000s, when he became one of America’s most successful stand-up comedians and starred in films including Good Luck Chuck (2007). But his professional momentum slowed around the same time that he was dealing with his brother’s theft and the deaths of his parents.
Cook has said that he struggled to write jokes and perform after the betrayal, taking nearly a year off from stand-up and going to therapy twice a week. He has also acknowledged that his career was naturally changing. “I wasn’t putting up, like, Sandler $100 million movies,” he told Rolling Stone. “I was hitting doubles.”
