Steve Kornacki Explains Shocking Game-Day Decision Behind His Viral Tie Look: ‘The Key to Getting Ahead’

NEED TO KNOW

  • Steve Kornacki explained a simple but surprising detail on how he styles his signature outfits

  • The election analyst is famous for his minimalist fashion, including his ties

  • Kornacki, who covered Tuesday Nov. 3’s historic election, explained that he only wears one tie and that he doesn’t even know how to tie it

Steve Kornacki is all about predictability when it comes to his fashion choices.

For as long as the NBC News politics correspondent has been on the air, he’s been synonymous with his “normcore” style, which of course includes his white collared shirts and his tie.

Sitting down for an interview with NBC News’ Tom Llamas, Kornacki, 47, explained that he isn’t about forecasting trends, but rather sticking to the same look over and over again.

“The tie is easy,” he said, in response to a TikTok video of a viewer wanting to know all about Kornacki’s game-day decisions on election night, including how he picks his tie.

Doubling down, he continued, “This is the only tie I own.” Then, he added, “Here’s the thing: I don’t even know how to tie it, but I know people who know how to tie ties. That’s the key to getting ahead in life.”

Kornacki didn’t clarify if he only has one tie per season, since he was photographed on Meet the Press just last month wearing a different tie than the striped chocolate brown one he wore for the interview, which also seemed to be the one he was wearing earlier in the year.

Still, Kornacki is devoted to his basics.

Back in 2020, Today reported that Kornacki was responsible for making Gap khaki pants high in demand after he wore them on television. A Gap spokesperson confirmed to the outlet that the brand saw a “dramatic increase in online traffic and within a day” around a 90 percent unit increase in online sales after Kornacki admitted to having a “bunch” of pants from the retailer. (Although, he switched out his uniform for something a tad more different on Nov. 3, dressed in darker pants, as some pointed out online.)

NBC News’ Tuesday night coverage also made headlines after Kornacki made an “abrupt” end to his midterm election coverage livestream when he walked off set and ended the live broadcast that was originally planned to be 13 hours long.

“I am going to take one more break. I just need to take about five minutes here, but I’ll be right back,” the election analyst said.

Shortly after, he went on social media to explain. “I was sure 13 hours would be fine but things caught up to me in a hurry at hour 10,” Kornacki wrote in a statement shared to X. “I can’t say thanks enough to all of you. What a ride and I think we did make livestream history.” He added, “Sorry for the abrupt ending!”
