This Charming New York Town Looks Like a Hallmark Christmas Movie—With Twinkling Lights, Horse-drawn Carriages, and Festive Markets

If you’ve ever wanted to visit a town that looks like it belongs in a Hallmark movie, you don’t have to travel far. Tucked into New York’s Finger Lakes region, Corning goes all out for the holidays, with decorated storefronts, horse-drawn wagon rides, Christmas markets, and a downtown that looks extra charming after dark.

Known as the “Crystal City” for its glassmaking history, Corning has also earned a reputation as a Christmas destination, recently landing on Hallmark’s list of Merriest Christmas Towns for 2026. Many festivities take place in the historic Gaffer District, where Market Street is lined with independent shops, restaurants, and galleries. Come the holiday season, downtown is decked out in twinkling lights and festive decor, with a full calendar of events, from parades to holiday markets.

Corning kicks off the holiday season with the Parade of Lights on Nov. 28, a longtime tradition featuring more than 50 illuminated floats, marching bands, carolers, and thousands of twinkling lights. The mile-long procession winds through downtown Corning, drawing thousands of spectators as Santa makes his grand entrance by horse-drawn carriage.

Another major highlight is the Sparkle festival, an annual holiday tradition in Corning that’s taken place for more than 50 years. On Dec. 5, the celebration will close Market Street to traffic and bring together holiday vendors, special shopping at more than 50 local businesses, live music, and performances across multiple outdoor stages. Visitors can also take horse-drawn carriage rides through the historic downtown, visit Santa’s Crystal Cottage in Centerway Square for photos, and gather for the community Christmas tree lighting.

Of course, a visit to Corning wouldn’t be complete without a stop at the Corning Museum of Glass, which puts its own spin on Christmas decorating. Each holiday season, the museum displays a 14-foot tree made with over 2,000 handblown glass ornaments. Visitors can also make their own glass ornaments, watch live glassblowing demonstrations, explore the museum’s collections, and shop for handmade gifts.

Minutes away, The Rockwell Museum joins in the festivities with its annual Gingerbread Invitational. The exhibition features elaborate gingerbread creations made by local bakers and artists, with designs that go well beyond the traditional candy-covered house.

Between all the festive programming, visitors can browse Market Street’s boutiques and specialty shops, warm up with coffee, hot cocoa, and pastries at Homestead Baking Co. or Soul Full Cup Coffeehouse, or settle in for a cozy dinner and a glass of wine at The Cellar. Corning is also a good base for exploring Finger Lakes Wine Country, with wineries like Castel Grisch Winery in Watkins Glen and Barnstormer Winery in nearby Rock Stream, both along the western side of Seneca Lake.
