Taylor Swift wasn’t in Denver on Sunday to watch Travis Kelce and the Kansas City Chiefs fall to the Broncos 28-24. Instead, she was in New York City, and according to one insider, it was all part of her plan to win an Oscar.
Swift spent Sunday at a screening and Q&A for Toy Story 5, which features her original song “I Knew It, I Knew You.” A new report claims that she has been quietly working to win an Academy Award for the song, and that an Oscar is just one step in a much bigger plan.
‘Masterminding’ an Oscar
Swift has had a busy few months. She married Travis Kelce at Madison Square Garden in July, and earlier this week, she became the youngest artist ever inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame.
She also wrote and recorded “I Knew It, I Knew You,” an original song for Toy Story 5 co-written with Jack Antonoff. The song is widely considered a contender for Best Original Song at the 2027 Academy Awards, with nominations set to be announced on Jan. 21.
Swift already has 14 Grammys and an Emmy, which she won in 2015 for an interactive media project. But an Oscar has eluded her so far after her song “Carolina” from Where the Crawdads Sing made the shortlist a few years ago, but it didn’t earn a nomination.
Now, Swift is reportedly taking her Oscar chances very seriously.
“Ever since she tied the knot with Travis in July, Taylor has been masterminding how to get an Oscar on her mantle for that song,” an insider told the Daily Mail.
According to the source, Swift’s campaign kicked into high gear in August, when she performed the song at the Grammy Museum. She also headlined the Academy Museum Gala on Oct. 17, where she performed classics like “Blank Space” and “Love Story” alongside her new song.
“Taylor was not paid to perform, she actually paid her musicians to be there, she paid for her own hair, makeup, styling and transportation,” the source said.
The insider claimed that Swift used the event to win over Hollywood heavyweights, from Charlize Theron and Colman Domingo to Elle and Dakota Fanning.
The insider specifically pointed to Sunday’s event in New York as a sign of how serious Swift is.
“On Sunday, she will be in New York City for a Q&A about I Knew It, I Knew You, so she is taking this really seriously,” the source said.
Swift did show up for the event, where she opened up about her friendship with her high school best friend, Abigail Anderson. Swift rarely attends Chiefs road games, but the event meant that she missed Kelce’s loss in Denver.
“Taylor will be working Oscar season like crazy,” the source said. “Plan to see her everywhere. Taylor will have to really charm the pants off these Oscar voters, which calls for her to be in Los Angeles.”
‘She Wants to Be an EGOT’
Still, the insider admitted that Swift faces some stiff competition, particularly from a Diane Warren song performed by Andrea Bocelli and Jennifer Hudson.
“Taylor’s Oscar is not a slam dunk,” the source said.
According to the insider, an Oscar win would just be one step in Swift’s long-term goal of becoming an EGOT, joining the exclusive group of people who have won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony.
“Make no mistake, Taylor is hyper ambitious and she wants to be an EGOT,” the source said. “She is starting with an Oscar win and down the road she will be going for a Tony win.”
Fans have also noticed that Swift has been sporting gold nails for months, which some believe is a nod to the Oscar statuette. Of course, gold is also one of the Kansas City Chiefs’ colors, so it may just be a nod to her husband.
The Daily Mail said that it has reached out to Swift’s representatives for comment. But if the report is true, she’ll be spending a lot of time in Los Angeles over the next few months.
