A Southern restaurant with roots stretching back to 1975 has lost its foothold on one of downtown Las Vegas’s busiest entertainment streets.
Its newer location was intended to bring a longtime local dining name to visitors exploring Fremont Street, but the experiment lasted less than a year.
The closure leaves another vacant restaurant space inside Neonopolis, a shopping and entertainment complex near the Fremont Street Experience.

For visitors planning where to eat downtown, the development also raises a question about what might replace the restaurant and whether its original Las Vegas location remains open.
11-Month Run Ends at Former Banger Brewing Neonopolis Space
The downtown branch of The Hush Puppy opened on November 18, 2025, in the former Banger Brewing space at Neonopolis, 450 E. Fremont St. It closed after approximately 11 months, according to Vital Vegas’s October 24 report.
Neither the restaurant nor Neonopolis had publicly confirmed a reason for the closure. The landlord is reportedly seeking a replacement tenant, but no successor has been announced.
The location had previously housed Banger Brewing, which closed in March 2023 after nearly a decade. The Hush Puppy occupied the space as a second location for a restaurant known for Southern-style seafood and comfort food.

Its arrival was presented as a way to bring a longtime Las Vegas dining institution into the downtown entertainment district. The Las Vegas Review-Journal’s November 2024 report detailed plans for the expansion, including fried catfish, gumbo, jambalaya, fried green tomatoes and other Southern dishes.

Original 1975 West Charleston Boulevard Location Remains Open
The restaurant began on West Charleston Boulevard in 1975, founded by Charlie and Virginia Ghormley, who brought Southern cooking traditions from Arkansas to Las Vegas.
The family operated the original restaurant for nearly five decades before selling it and the expansion rights to local businessperson Magdy Amer and his wife, Layla Amir, in 2023.
The downtown closure does not appear to mark the end of the restaurant brand. The original Hush Puppy website continues to list its West Charleston location and dine-in, takeout and drive-thru options. Visitors seeking its Southern menu should check that location’s current hours before making the trip.
Hush Puppy Follows Heart Attack Grill’s May 18 Neonopolis Exit
The closure follows another notable departure from the complex earlier this year.

Heart Attack Grill, a longtime downtown attraction known for its hospital-themed dining room and oversized burgers, closed on May 18, 2026, after nearly 15 years. The Las Vegas Review-Journal reported the Heart Attack Grill closure at the time.
Its departure and Hush Puppy’s more recent closure leave two restaurant spaces without confirmed replacement tenants in the same complex.
Neonopolis continues to offer other dining and entertainment options near Fremont Street, including Denny’s, Fat Sal’s, Dirt Dog and several nightlife venues. Its official leasing page provides information for prospective tenants.
For visitors, the downtown Hush Puppy is no longer a dining option, but its original West Charleston counterpart remains listed as operating. The next development to watch is which restaurant, if any, takes over the vacated Neonopolis space.
