Travelers have new space at Pittsburgh International’s outdoor terrace

Pittsburgh International Airport has opened a new outdoor terrace where travelers can get fresh air and watch planes without leaving the terminal.

The more than 1,000-square-foot airside terrace opened Oct. 20 near the beginning of Concourse D, according to a community announcement. It gives travelers a free outdoor option after security, with no lounge membership or additional fee required.

Rocking chairs and tables provide places to sit while waiting for a flight, while a walking path winds through native greenery and seasonal foliage. The terrace also includes a pet relief area and views of aircraft arriving and departing.

Pittsburgh airport’s terrace draws on the region

The space’s design reflects the Central Appalachians, drawing inspiration from the region’s rugged plateaus and exposed rock formations. Landscaping incorporates regional materials, including sandstone from a local quarry.

Airport officials described the outdoor spaces as creating the feeling of a “pavilion in the woods,” bringing Western Pennsylvania’s landscape into the passenger experience, according to the announcement.

The airside terrace is one of four outdoor spaces planned as part of Pittsburgh International Airport’s modernization project. A landside terrace has already opened, and two more terraces are expected to debut in 2027.

With the addition, PIT joins a relatively small group of U.S. airports that provide passengers with outdoor space after security.
